REGISTER NOW FOR JAN. 21 ICE FISHING DERBY at Hills Creek Lake

Register now for a new Step Outdoors Winter Outings series event at Hills Creek State Park, 111 Spillway Road in Charleston Township, seven miles northeast of Wellsboro.

An Ice Fishing Derby organized by Ice Fishing Across Pennsylvania, will be on Saturday, Jan. 21. The derby will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. with the weigh-in at the Beaver Hut Boat Launch on Hills Creek Lake. If there are any doubts about the safety of the lake, the event will be held the following Saturday, Jan. 28 if conditions allow, according to Ryan Bailey, president of Ice Fishing Across Pennsylvania.

The sole purpose of Ice Fishing Across Pennsylvania is to promote and perpetuate the sport of ice fishing, according to Bailey. It is a social media community that provides up-to-date weather and ice conditions and fishing reports for many major lakes and waterways in Pennsylvania; ice fishing tips and tactics that have been proven to work in Commonwealth waters; and accurate reviews that people can trust field about ice fishing gear after field testing it.

As a way to encourage more children and adults to get involved in the sport, Ice Fishing Across Pennsylvania sets up fishing events such as clinics, tournaments and derbies that anglers and the public can attend.

The Jan. 21 derby at Hills Creek Lake is for avid and amateur anglers of all ages and offers family fun with a competitive twist.

Prizes will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers in three categories: heaviest five panfish, heaviest bass and heaviest pickerel. There will also be a $5 lunker prize for the heaviest bass, panfish and pickerel.

Every youngster that catches a fish can enter it in a prize drawing for tackle provided by sponsor organizations. Among the sponsors is Tackle Shack owned by Don Kelly and located at 9683 Route 287, near Wellsboro.

Registrants cannot be on the ice before the 7 a.m. start time. During the derby, a rod and reel or tip up can be used. All fish must be alive and in water; dead or discolored fish will not be weighed. All Pennsylvania rules and regulations apply. The rules will be addressed during a meeting 10 minutes prior to the 7 a.m. start.

The entry fee is $10 per person for those ages 13 and older. Children 12 and younger can participate for free.
