WINTER OUTINGS SERIES JAN. 14, 15 and 21 EVENTS

The 2017 Step Outdoors Winter Outings series continues in Tioga County with two free indoor events this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 14 and 15, and two outdoor events on Jan. 21. All four are open to people of all ages, including children with adult supervision.

Family Climbing Day is Jan. 14
Saturday, Jan. 14, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., beginners and families with children of all ages, can experience the climbing wall for free with guidance from trained staff at Mansfield University’s Kelchner Fitness Center at 80 Clinton Street in Mansfield. All gear is provided. For information, call Director Amy DeLozier at 570-662-4865.

Eagle Talk and Watch is Jan. 15
Beginning at 1 p.m., a free program about bald eagles will be given indoors at the Visitor Information Center, located at the Ives Run Recreation Area, 14 miles north of Wellsboro on Route 287. The presentation will include photographs and information about the life of the bald eagle, the Pennsylvania Game Commission's reintroduction program, how to identify this raptor and areas on Hammond, Tioga and Cowanesque Lakes where people can go to see them. If conditions permit, an outdoor eagle watch will follow. Spotting scopes and binoculars will be provided. For information, call the Visitor Information Center at 570-835-5281.

Ice Fishing Derby is Jan. 21
On Saturday, Jan. 21, Ice Fishing Across Pennsylvania is hosting an ice fishing derby at Hills Creek Lake for avid and amateur anglers of all ages that offers family fun with a competitive twist. All entrants are asked to attend the 6:50 a.m. Jan. 21 derby rules meeting at the Beaver Hut Boat Launch in Hills Creek State Park at 111 Spillway Road, seven miles northeast of Wellsboro on Hills Creek Lake Road in Charleston Township. The derby will begin at 7 a.m. and end at 1 p.m. with a weigh-in and awarding of cash and/or other prizes to the top three winners in the bass, pickerel and five panfish heaviest weight categories. The entry fee is $10 per person for those ages 13 and older. Children 12 and younger can participate for free and those that catch a fish can enter a prize drawing. Winterfest is on Jan. 21 at Hills Creek
Winterfest 2017 will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Hills Creek State Park's beach parking area. The park is at 111 Spillway Road, seven miles northeast of Wellsboro on Hills Creek Lake Road in Charleston Township. Outdoor activities being held even if snow or ice is limited include free hot dogs to eat and hot chocolate to drink, kids' crafts, guided hikes, educational programs about wildlife, a 1700 pioneer display and demonstration and more. With adequate ice on Hills Creek Lake, there will be ice fishing demonstrations and ice skating and with enough snow, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on park trails and sledding on Beach Front Hill. Everything is free. Skis, snowshoes and skates will be provided free for those who don't have equipment. Those who do are urged to bring it. For information call Hills Creek at 570-724-4246.
