WINTER OUTINGS SERIES JAN. 7, 8, 14 & 15 in Tioga County

The 2017 Step Outdoors Winter Outings series continues in Tioga County with two free outdoor events this Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 7 and 8 and two free indoor events the following weekend, Jan. 13 and 14 All four are free and open to people of all ages, including children with adult supervision.

Sand Run Adventure is Jan. 7
This Saturday, Jan. 7, children ages eight and up and adults, all with some experience, will explore the Sand Run Trail System in hiking boots. "There will be several different hiking options," said Tim Morey, series organizer. "It looks like there will not be enough snow for cross-country skiing or snowshoeing even on top," he added. By 9 a.m., be ready to leave the trailhead, which is off the parking lot on Arnot Road in Bloss Township, five miles from Blossburg. If the weather changes, there will be a limited number of snowshoes, cross-country skis and winter traction devices available for participants to use free of charge. It is recommended that those who own hiking boots wear them and bring their own equipment, including winter traction devices in case of ice on the trails.

Have Fun Snow or No Snow on Jan. 8
From 1-3 p.m., this Sunday, Jan. 8, families are invited to build a snowman and use the snow as a blank canvas to create snow art. Snow or no snow, participate in the Hoop It Up and Ice Maker contests, go on a scavenger hunt, make a winter craft to take home, play tic-tac-toe or try to form an Eskimo circle. This event will be at the Stephenhouse Pavilion at the Ives Run Recreation Area on Hammond Lake. The park entrance is 14 miles north of Wellsboro on Route 287. Everything is free, including materials and hot beverages.

Family Rock Climbing Day is Jan. 14
Saturday, Jan. 14, between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., beginners and families with children of all ages, can experience the climbing wall for free with guidance from trained staff at Mansfield University’s Kelchner Fitness Center at 80 Clinton Street in Mansfield. All gear is provided. For information, call Director Amy DeLozier at 570-662-4865.

Eagle Talk and Watch is Jan. 15
Beginning at 1 p.m., a program about bald eagles will be given indoors at the Visitor Information Center, located at the Ives Run Recreation Area, 14 miles north of Wellsboro on Route 287. The presentation will include photographs and information about the life of the bald eagle, the Pennsylvania Game Commission's reintroduction program, how to identify this raptor and the areas on Hammond, Tioga and Cowanesque lakes where people can go to see them. If conditions permit, an outdoor eagle watch will follow. Spotting scopes and binoculars will be provided. For information, call the Visitor Information Center at 570-835-5281.
