Lumber Heritage Region Applauds Governor Wolf for Including Heritage Area Program Funding in Proposed Budget

(HARRISBURG, PA) – Today, HeritagePA, the state’s collective body of the twelve state-designated Heritage Areas, applauded Governor Wolf for including funding for the state’s Heritage Areas Program in his proposed 2017-2018 state budget.

“The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania holds within its boundaries some of the most significant historic, cultural, and recreational sites in the country,” said Jane Sheffield, heritage manager for the Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area and president of HeritagePA. “We are so pleased that the Governor has included this critical line-item funding.”

Heritage tourism supports more than 25,000 jobs, and heritage defined visitors were responsible for more than $126.5 million in state and local tax revenues in 2014.

“North Central Pennsylvania has a rich lumber heritage and the growth of this region is dependent upon using the past to move forward. The funding provided for by the State of Pennsylvania and Governor Wolf is pertinent to making this region a better place to live, play, and work.” Says Executive Director Holly Komonczi

With this funding the Lumber Heritage Region will be able to market tourism assets, provide mini-grants to municipalities and non-profit organizations and link the lumber industries to one another.

Pennsylvania Heritage areas conserve and develop cultural, historic and recreational infrastructure that preserves regional assets.

The twelve state-designated Heritage Areas in the Commonwealth are:

Ø Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area
Ø Delaware & Lehigh National Heritage Corridor
Ø Endless Mountains Heritage Region
Ø Lackawanna Heritage Valley
Ø Lincoln Highway Heritage Corridor
Ø Lumber Heritage Region
Ø National Road Heritage Corridor
Ø Oil Region National Heritage Area
Ø PA Rout 6 Heritage Corridor
Ø Rivers of Steel National Heritage Area
Ø Schuylkill River National & State Heritage Area
Ø Susquehanna Heritage Area
