Pennsylvania considers raising cost of fishing licenses

PennLive

The state Fish and Boat Commission may soon start angling for more of what's in your wallet.

Legislation submitted to the state General Assembly seeks to raise the price of next year's fishing licenses for the first time since 2005.

Senate Bill 460, submitted Feb. 28 by Sen. Jim Brewster, D-McKeesport, aims to raise next year's resident fishing license fee from $21 to $27.30.

That's an increase of 30 percent, the largest license fee increase in the commission's history.

The bill would similarly raise the fees for all types of fishing licenses and permits issued by the commission.

According to John Arway, Fish and Boat Commission executive director, the increased fees are both necessary and unavoidable.

“These fee increases are inevitable,” he said. “The conundrum this cycle is that we need to keep up with inflation, and we got hit with increased pension costs.

“We've been trying to get alternative revenues to delay increasing fees, but it's not to the place where we can see some relief,” Arway said.

The commission has reduced staff from 432 to 376 employees, Arway said. But even with a leaner workforce, the commission must either raise revenue or cut services.

Arway said he hopes raising fees now will result in increased services to anglers.

“You should expect to see better service from us,” he said. Read more....

Fishing license fees are paying retirement costs?

For what agencies?

What a screwed up mess.

They cost to much now. They want people to fish but we can't afford to.

What a joke...It's already over priced!! Go for it I amongst many others will quit fishing. Pennsylvania is really good at screwing up the fishing and hunting.

You people are a joke. Our licenses in PA are cheaper than almost any state and when you calculate the price per day of fishing, it's almost free. Can't even put a price on the enjoyment I get out of fishing, so even if they charged 10 times what they do, I'd still be getting a bargain.

How much do you pay for your pack of cigarettes that are killing you or your Budweiser 30 pack?

Everyone needs to look in the mirror and ask how much money they spend on other forms of entertainment or habits. If you go to the movies once a month it will cost over $20 , multiply by 12 and you have $240 a year If you smoke a pack of cigarettes a day at $2.50 a pack you will spend over $700 a year ., don't even get me going on the amount a casual drinker spends . At less than $100 a year for a fishing and hunting license I can be outdoors doing what I enjoy every day of the year. One of the cheapest forms of entertainment there is. Priorities people!!!!

How much is the fine for fishing without a license? Anyone know?

Boy you sure can pick out the liberal comments !

Haha. I just want to know where this guy gets his cigarettes for $2.50 a pack.

Reservation cigarettes are $24 a carton.

Yeah I like that I enjoy every day my guess is he doesn't work so we all but his license anyway..

not so much the price of the license as it is all the stamps you heave to buy. lots of people only get to fish a few times a year or take their kids out a couple of times, not worth it. how about the single moms who want to take their kid(s) for a day, just not worth taking the money out of their budget.

Glad you have all that money 2:53

Hey 5:48 , you have no clue on my employment situation. Just continue to post under your anonymous tag and show everyone your ignorance

27.50 for a whole year sounds like a bargain to me. Jeez....it costs more than that to take your kids to movie let alone any other day trip. Stop whining.

Fishing in PA is a bargain right now I say raise it

A bargain for something that you may not be able to consume? I think the cost right now is too much. With the license fee and trout/salmon stamp that is not much of a deal at almost forty dollars. It's shouldn't be mine or any other anglers responsibility to maintain their retirement coffers. Instead of gaining the revenues they are looking for, it will be more people who stop buying. Before you whine I will tell you I don't consume beer or tobacco. I work every day.

I used to go once a year, now I guess I won't go at all; Can't/shouldn't eat it.

Raise it. F&B needs it. Theyve been going under for years. Worst managed agency in PA. So yes, raise it. Then combine it with the 2nd worst run agency in PA, the PGC. The LBFC ran the numbers and there are many positions mirrored between the two. Ill be writing my legislators asking for the merger. The time has come.

Maybe the lawmakers should consider changing the pensions of the commission. Why do we even need them or the game commission, any police officer in the state can enforce fish/game laws so why waste time with this. Lower the prices and do away with both fish and game agencies.

Don't let these PA agencies fool you. Both PFC and the PGC employees are unionized. They want their raises just like anyone else plus benefits. I got no kick about paying increased fees but they should abolish both of these agencies and make one agency to save money but guess what, their unions lobby against that. Make both these agencies into one and see if license fee increases are needed.

If the Fish commission went under, we could fish for free, which is the way it should be! Your stocked trout taste like "butt". I stopped fishing when my son turned 16 and we both needed to pay for their "trout stamp" Good luck with your increases.

So much butt hurt. Complain about a little license increase, but probably buy scratch off tickets, cigarettes, booze, etc., and don't bat an eye. The people complaining on here should just stay home as they are threatening, leave the streams open to true conservationists who understand that our license fee pays for more than Fish Commission salaries. Sure the trout may taste like "butt", but I don't keep them anyway. I am a catch and release fisherman with the exception of a few crappie and walleye per year. You'll never have a positive life with a negative attitude. If you don't want to buy a license, don't. Fish on the 2 annual fish for free days and call it good. Sheesh. Some people are never happy.

I didn't have a problem paying the license fee but a few years back they cut the number of trout they were stocking so I started fishing ny there are alot better fishing waters.

I could see paying more if they would stock more fish for the kids.

I will quit fishing. I buy me my wife and four kids a lic each year. And the bay are full of stumps and they dont even clean out spots to go any place unless you want to hike a mile. Fuck fishing they charge more and do less. How about catchibg the assholes who dont pay.
