Baker Issues Statement on 2017-18 State Budget

HARRISBURG – State Rep. Matt Baker (R-Tioga/Bradford/Potter) today issued the following statement on passage of a $32 billion state spending plan for the 2017-18 fiscal year:

“With revenue numbers down, we had a real need to tighten our belts and make every penny count in this year’s budget. I am proud to report that the spending plan agreed to today is only a 0.2 percent increase over the current fiscal year.

“However, even though spending is staying somewhat neutral, with creative savings in some areas, we have managed to dedicate record funding to education, increase funding for the Department of Agriculture, pay for three new classes of state troopers and dedicate $7 million in needed funding to combat the state’s heroin and opioid epidemic. The State System of Higher Education, which includes Mansfield University, will also receive an $8.9 million dollar increase in funding.

“I am pleased we were able to gain consensus on a spending plan between the two chambers and the governor in time to meet our budget deadline. Although there is still some work to be done, we are all working together in a bipartisan fashion to reach an agreeable conclusion.”
