Coldwater Heritage Partnership Knotweed update

Knotweed control cutting went very well at Sweden valley on Wednesday. 6 volunteers turned out and did a great job. Two of us returned Thursday to do some finishing up.

Initial cutting was performed on three properties. Followup cutting was done at our Sweden Township demonstration location.

We will perform the final cutting for the season in early July. This will be followed by chemical application. Spot checking and followup spraying will be performed by our applicator.

Thanks to our volunteers without which this program wouldn't be possible. Public awareness is slowly building in regards to this
invasive pest.

Chemical application in a high quality watershed is not necessarily a wise choice. It's akin to these self indulgent people who spray ChemLawn (funny name change to TruGreen, as if we don't know what it really is), Roundup and other poisons on their properties and assume those toxins magically disappear after they annihilate dandelions etc. We are out own worst enemies. If you think it's environmentally responsible to release those poisons out there for your grandkids, pets and and other cohabitants of our community to ingest, do a little research (and don't trust the EPA, that's for sure) and you might decide to make some other choices.

Three of our direct neighbors spread the toxins every year. Some of their neighbors also do. When the poisons are applied you can literally smell it for an extended period and if you can smell it, you are ingesting it. Your kid and your dog are carrying it into your house if they step in a "treated" lawn. You want to know what's worse and absolutely indefensible? Check out the youth baseball fields in Coudersport. When you see the little white sign that is posted there, at least you are warned that your kid's ballfield is laced with toxins tied to cancer and other diseases. But when those signs disappear and the poisons do not, how can parents know that? Maybe at registration for youth baseball and softball they can provide a written notification that your child will be exposed to toxins, poisons and carcinogens throughout the season.

I didn't know the boro sprayed that crap on the ballfields. Can that possibly be true? That's insane!!!!!!! Who decides that?

This ballfield situation needs to be investigated , absolutely no need to expose our children to these deadly chemicals.
