Early Thursday morning, June 29, 2017, Mansfield firefighters responded to a reported structure fire at Mansfield University around 1:20AM.

Mansfield firefighters arrived on scene with their ladder truck and a full crew to the area of 40 Clinton Street. Firefighters met up with campus police and entered the university's old Maple Hall Dormitory.

At 1:40AM firefighters were seen using an exhaust fan to ventilate smoke from the ground floor of Maple Hall.

Mansfield Fire Chief Jim Welch confirmed that a fan unit in Maple Hall had malfunctioned and caught fire. The smoke from the small fire triggered the automatic fire alarm in the building, which alerted Mansfield Univeristy Campus Police, as well as, the local fire department.

Campus police were first to arrive on scene and upon their entry into the building they discovered the problem and were able to quickly put out a small flame coming from the fan unit with a fire extinguisher.

Firefighters arrived on scene a short time later and checked on the fan unit to make sure the fire was completely out. Next firefighters set up an exhaust fan to pull out the smoke from the ground floor of the building.

There were no other reports of damage to the dormitory, except that of the fan unit. Mansfield firefighters were cleared from the scene just before 2:00AM.

Another great job done by MU Campus Police and by Mansfield's local volunteer firefighters.
