McKean County Organizations Receive Costa Fund Grants

Three McKean County organizations received grants from the Samuel Costa Fund, together totaling $3,412.

Samuel and Dorothy Costa of Smethport established the fund in 2004 at the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation to benefit organizations each year that both cared about, said Executive Director Karen Niemic Buchheit.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church received the largest grant, amounting $1,706.

St. Raphael Church in Eldred and the Hamlin Memorial Library in Smethport also received grants, both in the amount of $853.

Grants to St. Raphael Church have allowed the parish to maintain an additional facility, the Coleman Center, for the utilization of a variety of local organizations that benefit the community.

“The generous contributions received from the Sam Costa Endowment Fund have allowed the parish to continue to offer the space for use,” said Laura Quinn, parish secretary. “Presently it is utilized by the Lions Club, Boy Scouts, Family Guidance Center and as an outreach as an intermittent consultation site for abused women and AA meetings.”

The Costa Fund has now given $54,343 in all to McKean County organizations, noted Ms. Buchheit.

“This year marks 13 years that the Costa Fund has provided a stable funding source to those organizations,” said Ms. Buchheit. “$54,000 is remarkable total, and because of the endowment that type of support will continue in perpetuity through the life of the fund.”

Donations can be made to the Samuel Costa Fund at CRCF, 301 North Union St., Suite 203, or online at cattfoundation.org.

Established in 1994, the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation is growing good by connecting donors to the causes they care about most in the region. Grants from the foundation support many areas, including education, scholarships, health care, the arts, community development, human service, and youth development. As a member of St. Rapheal parish, my husband and I are very thankful to Sam and Dolly Costa for their generosity to our church.
