North Central Forest Landowners Association Meeting is Saturday, June 24

Best Management Practices for Forest Roads
The North Central Forest Landowners Association is sponsoring an “in the woods” demonstration and discussion on proper installation of woodland road water control techniques on Saturday, June 24that the Don Comes Natural Resources Learning Center near Crosby, PA. The seminar will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. and is open to everyone interested in seeing and hearing about water and erosion control Best Management Practices (BMP’s) as they are installed.

Examples of BMP’s that will be demonstrated include installation of to a ‘culvert’ to better facilitate vehicle traffic and reduce erosion from continuous running water. Use of ‘head walls’ and ‘outflow protection’ will be illustrated. A ‘broad based dip’ will also be installed where intermittent water enters the road. Up slope ditching will be used to collect intermittent water.

The Comes Learning Center is located one half mile north of Crosby on Route 46N, and approximately 4 miles south of the intersection of Rt.6 and Rt. 46 from Smethport. The meeting location will be on the upland property side, and parking is available in a small lot up the driveway from the entrance.

The rough digging is planned to be done the day prior (Friday) for a few hours in the afternoon, weather permitting. Help is needed to prepare! If you are interested in helping, call
John Stratton at 814-887-1976 a few days prior to find out the exact time and give your contact phone number in case of last minute changes.
