William and L.R. Gale Foundation 2017 Scholarships

Eleven Galeton High School students have been awarded scholarships from the William and L.R. Gale Community Foundation. Since the inception of awarding scholarships by the foundation five years ago, the Foundation has awarded over $326,000. to 43 Galeton graduates. This year the scholarship total was $108,000. with each student awarded $1,500. per semester.

Scholarship recipients include: Eva C. Griffen, Alexis Lancenese, Brittni Leonard, Hunter Ludington, Olivia Pagano, Cortney Parsell, Laura Parsell, Faith Quinn, Madisyn M. Reiter, Davis Stedman and Cooper Sunderlin.

The Galeton Foundation started this scholarship program in 2013 for current Galeton high school seniors accepted by an accredited college, university or trade school.

The scholarship is paid directly to the educational institution. A good grade point average must be maintained and the parents must reside in the Galeton Area School District.

The Foundation was established through the generosity of Lucille Gale Knapp, granddaughter of William McClure Gale and daughter of Loring R. Gale. Her grandfather and father owned and operated the Penn Tanning Company in Galeton. The family established the town of Galeton through the success of their tanning business. At the time it was one of the largest sole leather tanneries in the United States. In 1897 the town was named in Mr. Gale's honor.
