First Presbyterian and Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church of Galeton, 7-2-17

by Martha Pennell, mpennell@northernpottersd.org

Grapevine newsletter articles are due to Robin Wednesday, July 5th.

Snack items for Traveling Day Camp/Vacation Bible School (July 10th-12th at First Presbyterian Church) may be left in either church kitchen. Needed snack items are juice boxes, small bags of chips/pretzels, and fruit cups.

In his sermon, “Things Aren’t Always As They Would Seem,” Pastor Roger told us doctors were not sure he would survive spinal meningitis he contracted as a child. He credits prayer, penicillin, and sulfa for saving his life.

His doctors called it a miracle but his parents credited God.

“Things aren’t always as they would seem.” In Acts chapter nine, Saul of Tarsus was wreaking havoc with Christians and they were warned to stay away from Damascus. God asked Ananias to go to Saul and place his hands upon him to transform him.

“Things aren’t always as they would seem.” Jesus spoke to the disciples about future events in Matthew 24: 15-22, including the destruction of Jerusalem. After they commented earlier about the beauty of the temple, Jesus told them it would end up as a pile of rubble.

In 70 A.D. the Romans destroyed Jerusalem. According to Pastor Roger, hatred, war, poverty, disease, and despair are humanity’s never ending hallmark. Isaiah 45: 22-23, “Turn to me and be saved, there is no other to me. Every knee shall bow”… Philippians 2: 10-11, “Every knee should bow and every tongue confess”… Romans 14: 11, “Every knee shall bow, every tongue give praise to God.”

Citing the lions at a zoo Pastor Roger observed recently, God is not deterred by earthly brouhahas, but with one roar.

Every knee shall bow and every tongue confess, we will not fear, you are near!

Thank you, Martha. Pastor Roger's father was our pastor for a while. Wonderful man. And his mother was special also.
