Five OHS students receive CRCF scholarships

Brooke Gronemier
OLEAN, NY, July 20, 2017 — Five Olean High School graduates recently received scholarships managed by the Cattaraugus Region Community Foundation, together totaling $43,000.

Rebecca Fox, Brooke Gronemier, Jordan McLaughlin and Luciano Rogers received the John J. Murphy Family Scholarship.

Jordan McLaughlin
A $10,000 scholarship given in four yearly awards of $2,500, the John J. Murphy Family Scholarship was established through a grant from the Communities Foundation of Texas and was continued with donations from of John J. “Jack” Murphy, former CEO and Chairman of Dresser Industries.

The scholarship is given with preference for a student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing, engineering or business. The scholarship is available to area students from Allegany, Cattaraugus, McKean (PA) and Potter (PA) counties, but first preference is for students from Olean area schools. Preference is also given to students whose family members are or have been employed by Dresser-Rand.

Luciano Rogers
Fox plans to attend Cedar Crest College to study genetic engineering. Gronemier will study mechanical engineering technology at the University of Dayton. McLaughlin will study engineering at the United States Naval Academy. Rogers will major in accounting at St. Bonaventure University.

Fox and classmate Saad Mirza also received the Olean High School Class of 1961 Scholarship.

Rebecca Fox
Established by Duane A. Geuder, a 1961 Olean High School alumnus, and his classmates, the scholarship honors the class and its teachers, in particular Norm Utecht and Mabel Wilson. The $1,500 scholarship is given to one male and one female student who has the top GPA in their math and science classes.

Mirza will attend Princeton and study mechanical and aerospace engineering.
