In modern times we call it the 4th of July

In 1776 on July fourth, the colonists announced their independence from Great Britain. The revolution had begun nearly a year before and would continue for several years thereafter (and was revisited in 1812).

Declaring independence is more that making a statement. Independence is fought for and cherished. We honor our forefathers and the many men and women who sacrificed to maintain that dream of freedom and independence.

In the past, that declaration on that historic day was referred to as Independence Day. In modern times we call it the 4th of July. As you observe and celebrate this day, Think of the independence and freedom you enjoy and not simply the reason to get drunk and watch fireworks on a particular calendar date.

Also remember that freedom and independence must be cherished, maintained and fought for by an aware public.
