Potential Scam

Jim, Can you please post something on Solomon’s Words regarding a telephone scam.

A resident had stopped into the Township Office and stated that she had received a call twice claiming to be from the Department of Treasury. One of the numbers is 202-622-2000, the other number she handed me was 315-634-767?

I can't speak to the 315 number as that comes back to being NY and without the last digit, all we can do is guess at where it came from. From my research, it originates in Syracuse, NY. But, the other issue is that it's a "Non-Fixed" VoIP number. This means it could be registered in Syracuse, but actually located anywhere in the world.

You can look up numbers easily using WhitePages.com:

As for the other number, that is to the Department of Treasury. But, even though it's a legitimate number, keep in mind that scammers know this too and they'll use whatever tactics they can to try to steal whatever they can from you. When in doubt, hang up and call the police or the company/agency they claim they're from directly.

Scammers can minipulat what shows as the caller number. It means nothing. It could be coming from anywhere, including international.

You would think the phone company could screen these types of calls.

9:09 pm you're right about the Numbers, when the fella called me, said he was calling from the treasury dept, I told him never to call my house again, he said b/c he was calling from an 8oo# it wasn't a scam, like I said, twice they've called, I take the phone to my tv, turn it as loud as it will go while their talking, no calls now for 2 wks, maybe it blew their ears out......
