Red Cross Seeks Volunteers to Help Sound the Alarm on Fire Safety

(Western PA) – The American Red Cross is seeking people to volunteer their time and help save lives at two Sound the Alarm home fire safety and smoke alarm installation events – one in Pittsburgh on Saturday, September 23, and one in Erie on Saturday, October 7.

“We’re looking for people to help us Sound the Alarm in Pittsburgh and Erie and be part of the nationwide Red Cross effort to help reduce the number of deaths and injuries from home fires,” said Dan Tobin, Director of Marketing and Communications for the American Red Cross in Western Pennsylvania. “By volunteering with the Red Cross, someone can truly make a difference in someone’s life. Please join us and help Sound the Alarm by volunteering for our Pittsburgh or Erie events.”

If you are interested in volunteering to educate people about home fire safety and install free smoke alarms, contact Jennifer Bailey at 412-522-9512 or visit the Western Pennsylvania Sound the Alarm website at

The Red Cross responds to nearly 64,000 disasters each year, the majority of which are home fires. Working smoke alarms in a home cut the risk of death by half, and having an escape plan further improves the odds of survival. The Red Cross wants to end these tragedies and save lives, the reason why the organization launched the Home Fire Campaign in 2014.

Here in Western Pennsylvania the Red Cross and our partners have installed roughly 20,000 free smoke alarms in communities throughout our 28-county region, helping to make more than 10,000 lives safer since the start of the campaign. Nationally, close to 260 lives have been saved as a direct result of our efforts.

Please help us Sound the Alarm by volunteering to install smoke alarms, making a financial contribution, or taking steps to protect your own family from home fires. You can learn more by visiting
