Oswayo Valley Memorial Library News

WWI Program: A brawl in Galeton, a zeppelin sighting near Emporium, five men
blown to smithereens in a Sinnemahoning powder plant explosion rumored to be
related to sabotage, fear and suspicion in German-American communities (like
Germania!). These newsworthy items and more filled Potter County town talk and
newspapers as World War I exploded across the global stage a century ago.

Potter County historian David Castano will fill in the details of these events on
Tuesday, August 8th, at 6:00 p.m. at the Oswayo Valley Memorial Library. Castano
will bring World War I artifacts from the Potter County Historical Society for “Show
and Tell”, including a shell fired during the Battle of Verdun, World War I helmets, a
gas mask, nursing medals, an American pilot’s uniform, an enlisted men’s tunic and
puttees, and lists of Potter County men serving in the war with details of their
service. This program is free and open to the public.

Children’s Appalachian Trail Program with Lauralee Bliss: Coming August 10th at
10:30 am : Appalachian Trail program/activities for children! Come visit with
“Blissful” who has hiked the famous Appalachian Trail twice and in each direction!
From bears to snakes, plants, trees, cool views, and funny hiking pictures, we will
explore the trail from Georgia to Maine! Find out how Blissful cooked on the trail
using a tiny stove and pot. Snuggle in a mummy bag in the woods. Create your own
“trail name” through drawing and words to earn a carabiner to hook on your day pack
or belt loop! This program is open to all elementary children free of charge.
