New York State Police Investigating Bank Robbery In Allegany

Request Public Help To Identify Suspect

The New York State Police in Olean is investigating a bank robbery that occurred at the Community Bank located at 3140 W. State St. in the town of Allegany, NY at approximately 11:15 a.m.

The suspect is described as a heavy set white female, approximately 5’08” tall, shoulder length, brownish-red hair. During the time of the robbery the suspect was wearing a light blue, navy blue and white striped shirt and jean shorts. The perpetrator also had a multi-colored bandana, sunglasses and flip-flops or sandals.

Information was developed that the subject soon changed into a black, short sleeved shirt at a nearby store. The female entered the bank, displayed a note stating that she had a weapon and demanded money. No weapon was displayed and she left the bank on foot in a northbound direction.

The female may be associated with another female and a charcoal, gray late 1990’s Chevrolet, two door Blazer or GMC Jimmy. The vehicle has a roof rack, spare tire on the back and a possible bug shield. The associated person is a white female with longer dark hair, wearing blue jeans, a bluish long sleeve shirt with tan sleeves.

Phyllis J. Sprague, 82, of 585 West Washington Street, Bradford, passed away Thursday, May 24th, at her residence.

Born November 1, 1929 in Bradford she was the daughter of the late James S. and Rhea P. (Franklin) Lawrence.

She was a 1947 graduate of Bradford High School.

On September 4, 1948 in Niagara Falls, NY she married James E. Sprague, who died on June 20, 2010.

Mrs. Sprague was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was a well known organist, playing at most of the area churches for Sunday sevices and weddings. She was a member of the TOPS Club of Bradford.

Surviving are three daughters; Danita (David) Hersh, of Quarryville, Laurie (Mark) Marcello, of Palm Harbor, FL; and Diana (Ernest) Rankin, of Mt. Jewett., four grandchildren, one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a son, Dennis Sprague.

Family will be receiving friends on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 from 3 to 5 & 7 to 9pm in the Hollenbeck-Cahill Funeral Homes, Inc. 372 East Main Street, and again on Wednesday, May 30th, from 10:00 to 11:00am in the First Presbyterian Church where funeral and committal services will be held at 11:00am with Rev. W. LeRoy Beckes, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Willow Dale Cemetery.

PennDOT Re-installs Posting Signs on Two Routes in Clearfield County

Clearfield – On Tuesday, May 29, PennDOT will uncover new weight limit posting signs on two different routes in Clearfield County. The weight limit posting on each route is for 10-tons.

Signs have been re-installed on a 3 ½-mile section of State Route 1016
(Keywadin Road) from Route 1011 (Rolling Stone Road) to Route 879 (Market Street) in the village of Karthaus.

Signs have also been re-installed on a small section of Route 1022 (Rolling Stone Road) at the “Y” intersection with Route 1016 (Keywadin Road).

Both roadways have been posted for some time and signs for both postings had previously been in place but were stolen. PennDOT is partnering with Pennsylvania State Police to patrol these roads in an effort to enforce the postings and curb sign theft.

PennDOT reminds motorists that it is unlawful to remove these posting signs. Individuals caught removing these signs will be prosecuted. Area residents are encouraged to contact Pennsylvania State Police if they see suspicious behavior.

Work progresses on the $50 million project to provide a series of new or rehabilitated bridges on Interstate 80 near Mifflinville in Columbia County.

The I-80 lane closures for the week of May 29 are as follows:

On Tuesday, May 29, the contractor will be setting concrete barrier on the westbound section of I-80 between mile 241 and mile 242 (Mifflinville) for a 10-day left-lane closure to perform road widening work.

On Tuesday and Wednesday, the contractor will have a daylight signing pattern on the eastbound section of I-80 between mile 242 (Mifflinville) and mile 243 to close the right lane to perform road widening work between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Motorists are reminded to pay full attention to their driving. Stay alert to the possibility of slow-moving or stopped traffic ahead of the work zone.

A country Style Barbecue Rib Dinner will be held at the First Church of God in Eldred on Saturday, June 2nd to benefit Maryetta's Mission, a scholarship fund in memory of Maryetta Jackson from Eldred.

Maryetta's Mission has donated over $7,000 since May of 2012 to students who are studying for the ministry. Ministry studies are not limited to pastoral but include any occupation considered ministering of the Christian faith, and also isn't limited to any denomination or church affiliation, but is limited to the geographic area of Western Pennsylvania and New York, plus Franklin County in Pennsylvania.

In addition to the dinner from 4-7 PM, or until sold out on June 2nd, a raffle will be held with the winner receiving an airplane ride sponsored by Twin Tier Aviation located at the Bradford Regional Airport.

Cemetery Needs Help

Groundskeepers Paul Keller and Jim Colwell were double-teaming with their whackers last weekend to spruce up the Eulalia Cemetery for the usual Memorial Day traffic.

A handful of dedicated people are struggling to preserve a cemetery that’s appreciated by many, but supported by relatively few.

The recession is being felt by the Eulalia Cemetery and, with Memorial Day nearing, the directors have put out a call for help. They face a struggle to keep bills paid and still maintain the cemetery – something has to give.

Over the years, through the generosity of those who left bequests in their wills and those who gave memorials or other donations, the board was able to make investments that yielded income to supplement the cemetery’s maintenance costs.

Interest rates fell, donations tailed off, and the board had no alternative but to tap a portion of the reserve, which further reduced the interest income.

Drastic measures have been taken, including board members reaching into their own pockets to help pay for the cemetery’s needs.

Anyone interested in the future of the cemetery is encouraged to attend the next directors’ meeting, which will be held at 6:30 pm on Wednesday, June 13, at the cemetery chapel. Current board members are Steve Erway, president; Andy Dubots, vice president; Donna Lehman, secretary/treasurer; Ilene Altenhein, Dale Anderson, Jim Berger, Gary Gunzburger, Barbara Heimel and Paul Keller.

Donations, including those in honor of or in memory of family and friends, may be sent to: Eulalia Cemetery, c/o Donna Lehman, P.O. Box 226, Coudersport PA 16915.

This is not the first time cemetery directors have raised the red flag in asking for help. In 1963, the treasury dwindled to 65 cents and the board faced debts of more than $1,000.
Community organizations and newspapers promoted the “Save Our Cemetery” campaign and the public responded.

A Bradford man has been charged with possession of drugs and assault after an incident Tuesday in Bradford. Court records accuse 20 year-old Brandon Nelson of choking a 17 year-old girl and slamming her head into a wall at Orchard Apartments.

Nelson is facing numerous charges, including assault, harassment and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver. He is jailed on $10,000 bail.

Roulette Man Convicted on Three Charges

A Roulette man was found guilty Thursday in McKean County Court on three different charges stemming from a bar fight in February of 2011.

24 year-old Jason Cornelius was convicted of assault, disorderly conduct and harassment for an incident involving another man during a fight at Moe's Bar and Grill in Port Allegany. The man was taken to UPMC Hamot in Erie for treatment of severe facial injuries and broken bones.

Cornelius will be sentenced at a later date.

First Dangerous Heat Wave of the Season Expected to Arrive this Weekend

Pennsylvania Departments of Health and Aging Offer Important Heat Safety Tips

Harrisburg – With hot temperatures and high humidity expected to make an early appearance in some parts of Pennsylvania this Memorial Day weekend, the Departments of Health and Aging are urging everyone to take simple steps to prevent serious heat-related illness or even death.

“With so many outdoor activities planned this holiday weekend, people need to be aware of the serious health threat posed by temperatures that may feel as high as 100 degrees or more in some areas,” said Department of Health Secretary Dr. Eli Avila. “Heat-related illnesses and deaths are preventable, yet each year Pennsylvanians get sick or die from underestimating just how dangerous hot weather can be.”

Healthy people of any age can experience heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to handle the high temperatures. Those at greatest risk are people over 65, infants and young children, and those with heart disease, high blood pressure, breathing problems or other chronic conditions.

“As a person gets older, their body may not be able to handle extreme temperatures as well. Certain types of medications can also affect how your body responds to heat,” said Secretary of Aging Brian Duke. “Simple actions such as wearing sunscreen, rescheduling events to cooler times of the day, and wearing a hat to keep the sunlight off of your head can go a long way in keeping people healthy.”

Individuals should do the following to avoid heat-related illness:

· Stay indoors in air conditioning as much as possible. Air conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death;

· Drink plenty of water throughout the day, and don’t wait until you are thirsty to drink liquids. Avoid drinks with caffeine, alcohol or large amounts of sugar as they can cause dehydration (loss of body fluids);

· If you must be outside in the heat, limit activity to morning and evening hours, and try to rest often in shady areas;

· Dress in light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and consider wearing a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses. Also use a sunscreen of SPF15 or higher;

· Check on those who may be more at risk from high temperatures like infants, children or older individuals; and

· Never leave your children or pets in vehicles.

The two most common types of heat-related illnesses are heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which is more serious. Someone suffering from heat stroke may experience a body temperature above 103° F; red, hot, and dry skin; rapid, strong pulse; throbbing headache; dizziness; nausea; confusion; and unconsciousness. If someone is experiencing heat stroke, call for emergency medical assistance and attempt to cool the person off in a shady place while waiting for help to arrive. Heat stroke can cause death or permanent disability if emergency treatment is not provided.

Heat exhaustion can occur after sun exposure or not drinking enough fluids after spending time outside. Symptoms of heat exhaustion are heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, tiredness, weakness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, and fainting. To treat heat exhaustion, rest, drink plenty of water and cool off the body. If not treated, heat exhaustion could result in heat stroke.

Work to Replace Oswayo Creek Bridge in Shinglehouse has Resumed

Potter County – Work to replace a structurally deficient bridge on Route 44 in Shinglehouse resumed recently. Once the new bridge is complete, PennDOT will be able to remove one more structurally deficient bridge from the Potter County list.

The bridge spans Oswayo Creek on Route 44 in the borough of Shinglehouse.

PennDOT expects that the current bridge will be taken out of service by Thursday of next week.

Traffic will then use a temporary bridge while the old one is demolished and the new one constructed. The new bridge will be open to traffic in the spring of 2013 – earlier if circumstances allow.

All work is weather and schedule dependent. Dolomite Products Group of Rochester, New York is the contractor on this $3.4 million project. Drivers are reminded to obey posted speed limits, use caution in work zones and always buckle up.

Aldine L. Zampogna, 85, of 49 York St. in Bradford, died Wednesday, May 23, at her home.

Born in Foxburg, PA, on April 30, 1927, she was a daughter of the late Carl and Florence Irwin.

On May 2, 1953 in Kane, she married Joseph F. Zampogna, who died on June 14, 2007.

She moved to Bradford in 1960 and was a Cub Scout den mother. She was a devoted mother and wife and loving grandmother.

A child of the Depression, she was very frugal. She loved to cut coupons, grocery shop, and bake and cook for her family. Banana bread was her specialty. She was a stay at home mom and proud of it. She always put her family first and worried constantly about those she loved.

Her devilish sense of humor made her root for any team that played the Buffalo Bills, tormenting her husband and son. She adored her cat, Gus.

Surviving are three sons, Frank C. (Kim) Zampogna of Palm Bay, FL; Larry J. (Suzi) Zampogna of Bethel Park; and Mark J. Zampogna of Bradford; a sister, Donna Perkins of Punxsutawney; and six grandchildren, Becky, Joseph, Anthony, Matthew, Brianna and Joshua. She was preceded in death by one son, Robert M. (Bonnie) Zampogna.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Bernard Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to McKean County VNA and Hospice.

Northern Potter Track Members To Compete At States

Nine members of the Northern Potter Girls & Boys Track teams were sent off Thursday

from the school with a small parade around both the High School and Children's School before heading out for Shipensburg where they will compete at States.

Members from the Ulysses, Genesee & Harrison Valley Fire & Ambulance Companies, followed by team members: Aaron Olney, Mathew Morgan, A.J. Schweigart, Ethan Kibbe, Clarrisa Knauer, Morgan Soule, Rebecca Warriner and alternates Jason Perry & Caleob Byron and their Coaches, Wayne Irish, Cory Drabert & Brian McCorkle, Chaperone Sheila Olney & Dale Erway joined the parade also.

Teachers students and other staff members were lined up outside the schools to wave, wish good luck and hold signs for the team. The team members received many high fives, good luck wishes and signs to take with them.

Derek Burdick receives John Egli Outstanding Scholar Athlete Award

Derek Burdick a graduate in May from Penn State DuBois has received the John Egli outstanding scholar athlete award from the Penn State University Athletic Conference (PSUAC) at a luncheon in State College.

The PSUAC selected one male and one female recipient from over 1,300 student/athletes across the commonwealth campuses. Derek earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing and Business Management while being a member of the basketball team at PSU DuBois for four years. Derek was diagnosed with a severe illness during his senior season which kept him out of several games and limited his play in others while doctors regulated his medication. Though Derek was forced to limit his practice time, his passion for the game and desire to see his teammates succeed never waved. He put the team before himself and mentored the freshman guards who were playing in his place.

With Derek back to full strength at the end of the season, he was a critical element in the team winning the PSUAC Championship. Derek received the Coaches Award for the second year at the PSU DuBois All Sports banquet for his leadership and character on and off the court.

Derek has been recognized by the USCAA as Academic All-American three times during his career, as well as team captain for two seasons. Derek's leadership on and off the court were invaluable to Coach Bennett and his staff.

Derek is the son of Michelle and Paul Burdick of Coudersport who were on hand at the luncheon to see Derek receive his award. The female selection for the John Egli award was Bobbie Caprice from Penn State Brandywine.

Also, honored at the luncheon was Penn State DuBois head men's basketball coach Dave Bennett. Coach Bennett was selected as "Coach of the Year" for men's basketball; Dave "thanked his assistant coaches and his players for a year of hard work and achievement – he shares the award with all his players and staff".
