April Autism Awareness Month in PA

HARRISBURG - To heighten awareness of the growing number of Pennsylvanians living with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Secretary of Public Welfare Estelle B. Richman joined Speaker Dennis O'Brien and other legislators today to proclaim April as Autism Awareness month, and encouraged all Pennsylvanians to continue their advocacy efforts.

"So many of us now have a personal connection to someone living with autism. Whether it's a close friend or relative or the neighbor down the street, the issue of autism is never far from our own front door," said Secretary Richman. "We are committed to working with members of the legislature and support their efforts to bridge the gap that so many families encounter when trying to access services."

In the past year, Pennsylvania has made great strides in helping to meet the unique needs of individuals and families living with autism. In February, DPW launched a new Bureau of Autism Services within the Department of Public Welfare's Office of Developmental Programs which now provides expertise and support for all state agencies which serve Pennsylvanians with autism.

In addition, the Rendell administration recently announced a one-time mini-grant opportunity which will help individuals and families gain access to essential community services and supports.

Autism is a neurobiological disorder that affects a person's ability to communicate and relate to others. In the past 15 years, the number of individuals in Pennsylvania diagnosed with ASD has risen by over 2,000 percent.
