Family Asks "Free Marissa"

WESB News: 11/12/07 - Mom Fighting SNI for Custody of Daughter

You may have seen the signs with the plea "Free Marissa" and wondered what they mean.

Marissa Prechtel is a 4-year-old girl who was taken from her mother and given to her father by the Seneca Nation of Indians Peacemakers Court.

Her father is a member of the Seneca Nation; her mother is not. Although the Senecas are a matrilineal heritage – meaning their bloodlines flow through their mothers – the court ruled in favor of Marissa's father.

Amdanda Prechtel of St. Marys is fighting the Senecas for custody of Marissa, but since Since the Seneca Nation is a sovereign government, the U.S. Constitution is not binding there.
