J.C. Penney Store To Close

Employees of the Coudersport JC Penney Store were told Friday that the store will be closing in this coming February.

The news has been confirmed by Stan Swank, head of the Coudersport Retail Merchants Association but WFRM has been unable to talk with any JC Penney officials to find out more. Swank said company officials said the closure is due to lack of sales.

County officials were scrambling Friday afternoon to see if there was anyway of encouraging the company to reconsider its plans.

Apparently the company is not aware that the Coudersport and Potter County area is on the verge of a new wave of economic prosperity as new jobs are replacing those lost when Time Warner pulled out of town.

Empereon is hiring at a very rapid pace and Wagner is planning an increase in their employees with the aquisition of a new building sold by the Adelphia Estate.

Many of these former Adelphia properties that have been sitting empty have been sold and will be providing room for new jobs.

The three new County Commissioners have all had a hand in promoting Potter County for a better economy and they won't be sitting on their laurels.

The worst is over for this area. This is not the time to jump ship. The new prosperity is just around the corner.

Information from WFRM was used in this article.

I agree. It's definitely not the time to jump ship. It may not happen over night, but things will get better and better in Potter County.
