Snowmobile Rider Found Dead Friday Morning

From Elmira Star Gazette
GALETON — A Galeton man died late Thursday night when the snowmobile he was riding went off a state forest road and struck several trees.

Potter County Deputy Coroner Ken Wingo pronounced Carl R. “Rusty” Akers, 27, of School Street, dead at the scene of the crash, along Lyman Run Road, 11 miles west of Galeton, at 9:55 Friday morning.

Wingo said Akers was riding his Kawasaki Nitro 1000 snowmobile on Lyman Run Road sometime before midnight on Thursday and became separated from others with whom he was riding.

His snowmobile left the road, traveled 65 feet and struck several trees, Wingo said.

Akers, who was wearing a safety helmet and full protective gear, died instantly, Wingo said. He listed the cause of death as head and neck injuries.

Akers’ companions searched for him, but could not find him.

A state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources laborer grooming the road for riders discovered the accident scene and body at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

Akers was a mechanic at Larry's Sport Center near Galeton. The crash occurred about five miles west-northwest of Lyman Run State Park.
