Bike & Build To Arrive In Coudersport On Monday

Picture shows Bike & Build Riders Preparing
To Start Cross Country Ride in Providence, RI
This group will Arrive in Coudersport on Monday
Thirty two college students from all around the nation are not too concerned with the price of gas this summer.

They are traveling across the country from Providence, RI to Seattle, WA by bicycle.

They started in Providence on June 6, and have made their way to Wellsboro, PA today according to an email received today from one of the bicyclists, Eric Rowell, who is from Texas.

After staying over in Wellsboro tonight, they plan to make their way to Coudersport on Route 6 on Monday where they will stay over and head to Warren, PA on Tuesday.

The sponsoring organization, Bike and Build, sets up these cross country bicycle trips each year, raising money for affordable housing. Each bicyclist has to raise $4,000.00 in order to participate. Some of that money goes for support of their trip and most of it goes to building projects for affordable housing.

Along the way the group stops in scheduled locations and donates a day's labor for Habitat For Humanity projects. This year so far they have helped frame a house in Providence, and helped spread several hundred tons of topsoil at a Habitat project in the Binghamton, NY area.

Riders from prior years found bonding together as a group, and overcoming the elements, hills, and mechanical difficulties, a wonderful experience. Seeing the United States on a bicycle is completely different from making the trip in a car, plane or train. The interaction with locals is something you just can't experience any other way.

The group stays over in churches, ymca's, and other donated lodging. This year's group got an extra treat when they were invited to stay in comfortable beds in a lodge with showers and all the trimmings in eastern NY.

Spotty internet connectivity has made it impossible to find out where they are staying in Coudersport this year, but last year's group stayed at the Coudersport Alliance Church.
Pastor Bernie Knefley rode out and met them at Denton Hill and accompanied the group to the church.

The group makes public presentations on affordable housing as part of their mission. Potter County Habitat for Humanity President, Mitch DeLong, was to attempt to contact the group by cell phone tonight and we have asked him to advise us if the group plans a public presentation on Monday.

I would urge the residents of Potter County to cheer these riders on as they travel through our county, and give them a God's Country welcome they will remember as a standout of their trip. And of course if you are on Route 6, please be aware that they will be on the road, and afford them extra care in passing.

A local motel owner wrote offering rooms and showers for the Bike & Build group coming to Coudersport Monday. He contacted them and found out that they will be staying at the Coudersport Alliance Church again this year and showering at the high school. The church will be providing dinner and breakfast. They plan to arrive in town around 3:30 or so and they would love to meet people while they are here and would welcome any type of foodstuffs for the trip, power bars, cereal, snacks, etc.
