Glenn O. Hawbaker Starts Work Today On Rt. 15 North Rehabilitation

Route 15 north rehab scheduled to start today

By ALISSA EATON aeaton@sungazette.com

A $5 million project to rehabilitate nearly eight miles of northbound Route 15, from Hepburnville to just south of Route 14, begins today.

The scope of the work being done by contractor Glenn O. Hawbaker Inc. includes concrete patching, small repairs, milling and paving and guide rail upgrades.

It also involves reconstruction of the bridges over Hoagland Run, Route 973, Saint Michaels Road and Pleasant Hill Road, all in the northbound direction only.

All four bridges in the area will receive an epoxy overlay to preserve the bridge deck and is expected to improve winter services, according to Rick Mason, community relations coordinator for the state Department of Transportation.

“The epoxy overlay retains salt when it is put down,” Mason said. “It keeps the salt on the travel lanes longer.”

The bridges were opened to traffic in 1990. Mason said many bridges get epoxy overlays, which are done for deck preservation purposes.

Traffic will be restricted to a single lane in the northbound direction. Southbound traffic will be restricted to a single lane at the Hoagland Run and Route 973 bridges when the deck work takes place.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of October. Mason said PennDOT does not expect many traffic tie-ups in conjunction with the project.
