WFRM Recalls Memories Of Kane Tornado

It was almost exactly 23 years after the devastating Kane Tornado when a severe thunderstorm tore through parts of the WFRM listening area Saturday evening .

The National Weather Service posted a severe thunderstorm warning for Roulette, Shinglehouse, Genesee and other communities at about 6:14p.m. Almost a half inch of rain fell during the storm on Fishing Creek and hail was reported along the North Hollow Road in Sweden Township.

Some 740 Allegheny Power customers lost electricity in Roulette Township from the fire hall to Railroad Avenue and up Seymour Drive and were in the dark for about 12 hours.

On May 31, 1985 a tornado ripped through East Kane in McKean County, claimed three lives and destroyed several homes and damaged churches. The torrential downpour from the tornado reached Coudersport that night at about 8:15 p.m.

Solomon's words editor was listening to the scanner that night when a report of a house in the middle of the road at Kane came across. A later visit to East Kane, where I had operated a furniture store for a short time, found that building wrecked, and nothing but devastation through out the area. We picked up pieces of papers from houses destroyed in Kane and Tionesta in yards in Roulette. The tornado stopped over the hill on Rt. 155 South of Port Allegany.
