George A. Packer, Sr., 80, Shinglehouse, PA

Shinglehouse, PA----George R. Packer, Sr., 80, of Eleven Mile Road, Shinglehouse, PA, died Thursday, July 17, 2008 in his home surrounded by his loving family after a long illness.

Born January 2, 1928 in Shinglehouse, PA, he was a son of Charles E. and Gertrude Prince Packer. On September 18, 1992 in Chrystal, PA, he married Judy E. Frederick, who survives.

Mr. Packer attended area country schools and was a U.S. Army veteran having served during World War II as a medical aidman. He enlisted at age 18.

He was employed as a pipe fitter for 37 years by Dresser Rand in Olean, NY, starting in September of 1952 and retiring in 1989.

He was a member of the Chrystal United Methodist Church, a member of the Shinglehouse American Legion Post 530, and a member of the United Steelworkers Union.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and mowing his lawn.

Surviving besides his wife are his mother, Gertrude Kemp of Coudersport, PA; seven children: Linda P. Fagan of Bartow, Florida, Janice (Jerry) Sutton of Lakeland, Florida, Adam C. (Sonia Blakemore) Packer of Shinglehouse, PA, Bonita (Shane) Snyder of Ulysses, PA, Sheila (Jeff Jobe) Dodd of Shinglehouse, PA, Kathy (Ricky Stover) Frederick of Great Valley, NY, and Jennifer (Ron) Weik of Uniontown, Washington; nineteen grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a half brother, Richard (Sharon) Packer of Shinglehouse, PA; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his father, Mr. Packer was predeceased by a son, George R. Packer, Jr.; a brother, Chuck Packer; two stepsisters, Virginia Ogilvie and Florence Walker; and a stepbrother, Virgil Kemp.

Friends may call on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held on Monday, July 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. The Rev. Daniel P. Grimes, pastor of the Chrystal United Methodist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Chrystal Cemetery.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord full military honors on Monday.
