Gas well fire burns in Leidy

LOCK HAVEN - A gas storage well has been burning since early Sunday in a very rural section of Leidy Township, despite the best efforts of Renovo area fire companies and Dominion Gas Co. to quell the blaze.

The fire was made more difficult by the high winds arriving overnight from the remnants of Hurricane Ike, and the extremely remote location of the area.

No estimates were available this morning of the number of emergency units and firefighters dispatched to the region.

The Clinton County Emergency Communications Center forwarded all inquiries to the Dominion company.

"We have a storage well still burning," Dominion Media Relations Director Dan Donovan said this morning. "We have a lot of equipment at the site and we are bringing more in."

Donovan said the well leads underground to the storage system in the area known as the "Greenlick Field."

"Nobody has been hurt and it's not near any structure," Donovan said. "It's not doing any harm. It's flaring and burning. We had some difficulty getting the emergency equipment up there, and we have flown in some experts in this type of fire from Texas to help put it out."

Donovan said this particular blaze is "just like any nossle-straight-up fire" involving natural gas. Emergency personnel cleared brush around a swathe of forest near the fire to ensure it didn't spread to the nearby forest," he said.

"We created the fire ring last night and it worked," Donovan said. "We're concentrating on getting it out right now.

"We have experts there this morning looking at it right now," he added. "They are bringing specialized equipment in, but they have to examine the situation before they can decide whether they need it or not. The equipment won't arrive until tomorrow morning, because they are driving it up from Texas.

Dominion Transmission, Inc., headquartered in Richmond, Va., is the interstate gas transmission subsidiary of Dominion.

The company is primarily a provider of gas transportation and storage services. The largest of those storage areas is in the Tamarack area of Clinton County. Dominion uses several former natural gas fields in the Tamarack area to store fuel, pumping it in over the warm season in preparation for winter, according to Donovan.

Dominion operates one of the largest underground natural gas storage systems in the United States with links to other major pipelines and to markets in the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions of the United States. The company maintains 7,800 miles of pipeline in six states - Ohio, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and Virginia. Dominion stores and transport large quantities of natural gas for large customers, such as major utilities and power plants.

This fire is actually in the Cross Fork area. Both Kettle Creek Hose Company # 1 and Kettle Creek Ambulance were the first to respond and continue to stand by at the fire location. The ladies of Kettle Creek are feeding the workers at the scene at their own expense and could use any monetary donations to help. Mail to KCHC # 1, Cross Fork, PA 17729.
I have emailed the author of the article to correct the 'Renovo area fire companies' wording in his article. The incorrect start of the article identifying the area as 'Lock Haven' was also corrected.

The well fire is in the Greenlick storage field, owned and operated by Dominion, and is just north of the Dominion Leidy facility.

ANY UPDATES ON THE FIRE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED !! THANK YOU

My thoughts and prayers are with the individuals who are fighting the fire. They are true heroes. May God keep them safe!
