Believe It And Achieve It--Potter Teens

Teen Conference ‘08 Big Success

Potter County Today

Seventh- and eighth-graders from across Potter County converged on Northern Potter High School Friday for “Teen Conference 2008,” sponsored Potter County Human Services and several partnering organizations. This year’s theme was “Believe It and Achieve It,” with a special emphasis on wise decision-making and career opportunities. Students were able to choose from among 15 workshops after a keynote address by Dr. Anthony Evans, director of the Cattaraugus (N.Y.) County Youth Bureau and a popular motivational speaker. He emphasized “good dreaming” and the wisdom of setting goals for personal growth and service to others. Dr. Evans also presented one of the breakout sessions on bouncing back from life’s inevitable setbacks.

Other workshops included: Robotics, by Teresa Batterson and Michelle Reiter from Penn State Cooperative Extension and SUNY Alfred State College; Taxidermy, by Dave Jones; songwriting, by the Adam Ezra Group (which later performed); Forensics, through Science in Motion and the Oswayo Valley Science Department; Careers in the Outdoors, by Education Specialist Liz Helms of Cherry Springs State Park; Professional Sports, by Brian Stavisky of the Los Angeles Angels baseball team; Careers in Art, by Sarah Batson of Coudersport High School; Cosmetology; Health and Fitness; Teen Decision-Making and Peer Pressure; and Nutrition.

Potter County Mentor Program, 21st Century Community Learning Centers, Parents Helping Parents, Office of Children, Youth and Families, and the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program were co-sponsors, while school officials at Northern Potter, Austin, Oswayo Valley, Coudersport, Galeton and Port Allegany assisted. This was the eighth year for Teen Conference.
