Cameron County Long Beards Hold 1st Annual Jake's Day

By Kathy Brooks <kathyb@zitomedia.net>

Cameron County Long Beards held their First Annual Jakes Day 2008 on Sunday, October 26th.

Thirty children participated in the event which was held at the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club. Participants enjoyed several conservation and outdoor-related activities including archery, fly-fishing, target shooting, laser shooting, turkey calling demonstrations, a compass station, and crafts.

Jackie Flynn, Environmental Education Specialist from the Sinnemahoning State Park, was also on hand to discuss owls and their habitat. Participants were also able to disect owl pellets and learn about the various species which live in our environment.

Free hot dogs, chips, cookies and beverages were provided by the CC Longbeards. Each child received a turkey call and compass for their participation. Thanks to the National Wildlife Turkey Federation, two bow and arrow sets were also given away along with various other door prizes.

According to Ray Kratz, President of the Cameron County Longbeards, this year's event was a great success and they hope to see a larger turnout next year.

He goes on to say that by getting kids involved in the outdoors, ensures that the future of our outdoors will continue to prosper and be protected.

The CCLongbeards would like to thank all of the members of the Bucktail Rod & Gun Club, Smith's Sports Store, Olivett's Shurfine Market, Frito Lay, Cameron County Family Center, the Mountaineer Search & Rescue Squad, Jackie Flynn and the Women in the Outdoors for their donations and participation in this year's program. What a great thing to do. Be with a kid and you will have a pretty good idea what he is doing, right or wrong.
