Deer Poaching Suspected

WESB News: 10/18/08 - Illegal Deer Kills Investigated

Pennsylvania Game Commission Wildlife Conservation Officers and Deputy WCOs have been investigating cases of illegally killed deer.

In the Northcentral Region, McKean County WCO Len Groshek says he received reports of deer poaching in the Crosby area, and recovered and head and hide from a large doe that was shot. The head and hide were placed in a garbage bag and thrown from a bridge into Potato Creek, he says.

Cameron County WCO Wayne Hunt says he has been receiving reports from concerned sportsman and members of the community pertaining to poaching occurring in his district. He says people are jack lighting large bucks to collect their antlers. The investigations are continuing.

And people wonder why the sport of hunting is no longer what it use to be!

Anonymous said...

Just maybe it could be the outrageous cost of a license!!! Talk about theft!

Anonymous said...

So breaking the law is fine if you don't like something?! That really shows the concern and respect for those that do abide by the law. Those that follow the rules can't enjoy the sport because of those that ruin it for everyone else.

Welcome to Potter County!! People in this area have been shooting deer out of season for as long as I can remember. Did anyone ever hear of "crop damage"? Someone probably put the last of their money into their gas tank and still had to put food on the table.

Anonymous said...

Think about how much money you waist on cig. and beer. A hunting license will let you hunt something 365 days a year. Just figure out how much it costs you per day for each and maybe you'll wake up and realize what you just said!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anonymous said...

how come you get in more trouble killing an animal then a person?

Anonymous said...

so, are you assuming that all deer poachers are drunken smokers? That nobody would poach deer unless they smoke or drink? Cmon, you can't be that shallow of a person. Tell me that is not what you meant when you made that comment.

Anonymous said...

I don't consider drinking beer a "waste"...I would rather think of it as a way to purge the weaker brain cells out and make my brain stronger and smarter.

Anonymous said...

No I believe the person is trying to make a point of what your hunting license is worth. The individual with the brain cell comment pretty much explained what has happened to him.

These comments are exactly the kind of thing that make me sick about living in this area.People love to blame others but most of them are the ones that are doing it also. The men and or women who are jacklighting are not at all sportsman and never will be.The amount of money for licenses still doesn't compare to other states and food on the table is not the issue here mostly its bragging rights with skills of an outlaw not a hunter. Most likely the guns used in these killings are the ones stolen from the local camps over the last year or so.

If you don't like living here MOVE!! And if you kill a deer out of season for food and jerky there is nothing wrong with that, just wait when the economy crashes and you can't get food their will be alot of deer killed out of season,
COUNTRY BOYS WILL SURVIVE !!

Amen!

This series of blogs is getting ridiculously redneck. Some of the posts I have read are about as intelligent as assuming that if we open season on the trailor parks and obvious white trash around here, we might see less of this.

Regardless of personal opinion, it is illegal to poach. Bottom line. I highly doubt that this is a matter of not being able to afford groceries.

There is nothing wrong with being from the country, eating deer meat, or even quoting Hank Williams Jr if that is necessary but keep in mind that it isn't 1892 anymore.

Perhaps some of the folks with the "COUNTRY BOYS WILL SURVIVE" attitudes are the ones that haven't evolved enough to get a real job and be able to put food on the table.

what does living in trailer parks have to do with white trash, and how long did it take you, while kicking cans around in YOUR trailer park to come up with such an ignorant comment. I have never lived in a trailer park, but I don't think that you are any better than anyone who has ever or still do live in trailer parks. And as for white trash, well I would have to say that anyone who would ever be so judgemental as you are sounding would be considered white trash. I have seen and known people who are successful living in trailer parks. And as for the ones who live on a fixed income should not be called white trash either. That was crude of you to even say that. who do you think you are? People need to live somewhere and damn you for picking them apart like that. Is your self esteem so low that you can only retaliate to someones comments by trying to make yourself and others think you are so much better and worthy? This site is used to give opinions, not to humiliate and hurt peoples feelings like that, you big bully. Financial stability shouldn't be in such a category, only ignorance and condenscending jackasses should. And I can bet that the person making the comment about poaching for bragging rights is probably right, and whether rich or poor, or living in a trailer or two story home, is not what causes some people to want to brag. I have seen people who have money, plenty of hunting rifles, and hunting licenses get caught poaching deer, and I have also seen those that don't. I have seen grown adults and kids get caught as well. So think before accusing those less fortunate by slandering them for having less than you.

By the way folks....I was just joking with the beer and brain cells post....

YES it is wrong to poach deer. YES it is cheaper to buy a liscense than it is beer, smokes and a bag of Doritos. Just think of the idiots out there that buy the liscense, beer, smokes and chips, AND POACH A DEER RIGHT OUT THE FRONT DOOR OF THEIR TRAILER WHICH IS LOCATED IN THE TRAILER PARK.. IMAGINE THAT .. THOSE ARE SOME SERIOUS COSTS RIGHT THERE ..

JIMMY JOE..

The bottom line is they are violating the law no matter there quality of person. With any luck they will get caught and prosecuted. I'm sure if a needy person contacts the game Commission they will put them on the list to recieve deer meat as it becomes available. Just remember the ones that poach are stealing from the person that abides by the law, hopefully that's most of the people commenting!!!!!

Anonymous said...

Maybe instead of whining, you should step off your trailer porch and walk over to your neighbor and tell him or her to put their gun back in the trailer. I am sure you only live ten feet away from them.

Anonymous said...

With all of the help out there now with food banks & church programs that provide food to the needy, poaching deer to survive is NOT A GOOD EXCUSE...It's wrong and that's it.. END OF STORY

Anonymous said...

I got your story, mine is if it's
brown it's down, back straps on the grill. good eats.

Anonymous said...

They might as well let everyone have a free for all with the rest of the deer and just finish exterminating them. There aren't that many left now anyway...thanks to the PA Game Commission.....

The comment about the PA Game commision is correct.....

But let me add to the thinking process. I have yet to here anyone discuss in any aticle or town hall meeting is that not only are you wrong for poaching at night you are also paoching when you fail to tag all 20 or so deer you shoot between Oct.and Feb..

Sorry for the rant but it is so true and this is the game comm.
secret way of getting what they are out to accomplish.

While still making lots of money on licences and ect.

D-Map tags are a joke and just more fuel to shoot more deer between Oct. and Feb.

Thank God the deer still have sndays.

Just think of all the extra deer we would have if the poaching wasn't going on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

But that's right the back straps on the grill say's it all.

You all need to grow up and be REAL MEN. And be considerate of those around you and quit thinking about yourselves. This mentality of getting what i can for me at the cost of others is just plain ridiculous. Fine example to set for the younger generation. And you all wonder why our nation is going to hell full speed ahead!

Anonymous said...

It is also against the PA Game Commission laws to harvest a deer and not submit your harvest report card. How many people can honestly say that they always send that little card into the PGC when they harvest a deer and have never forgotten to do it.

Anonymous said...

What .. now automatically these are all MEN leaving these comments?? Geesh... we can't have co-ed volleyball, football and now hunting / poaching??

Anonymous said...

I can honestly say that I NEVER EVER harvest a deer and forget to turn in a card. I have never poached either! I don't hunt! And I am a girl, so now we know of at least one girl commenting. However, I do in a house full of hunters and I love venison myself, just can't bring myself to kill the adorable animals!

Anonymous said...

I have been trying to be considerate to all of the tourists that come to Potter County. I am getting rid of all of the deer so the Mountain Lions can't get them......

Anonymous said...

Good luck with that.

Good luck with that.
