The state Labor Department reports Potter County’s jobless rate improved between August and September, dropping from 7.7 percent to 7.0 percent. That compares to 7.1% a year ago. Unemployment rates for neighboring counties were Cameron, 8.8%; Elk, 6.5%; McKean, 6.4%; and Tioga 5.7% .The national rate for the period was 6.1% while the state’s unemployment rate was considerably lower at 5.1%.

Kane-based state police have charged 61 year old Roger Streit of that town with aggravated assault for an incident allegedly taking place at his home on Niver Road Friday evening. Paul Glies of Baden and his brother, James Gleis of Freedom, PA told police they went to Streit’s home regarding a “perceived misunderstanding about a hunting issue,” and were greeted by Streit with a semi-automatic handgun pointed at them. The brothers told authorities Streit threatened them and pulled the trigger on the weapon so that the click of the hammer could be heard as it was pointed directly toward each of them. They also claimed Streit struck James in the head with the butt of the gun but they were able to wrestle it away from the suspect before leaving to call police. Streit was arraigned before District Judge Bill Todd who set bail at $50,000.

Several recent thefts are under state police investigation. Troopers here are investigating a couple of camp burglaries taking place sometime since mid-June.

Someone forced open a garage door at a camp on Evergreen Lane in Ulysses Township owned by Sherilee Carpenter of State College. Once inside the main building, the intruders rummaged through the contents but apparently took nothing though damage to a fence and door is estimated to be about $200.00.

A passerby recently noticed an open door at the Yoo-Hoo Camp on Pine Mountain Road in Stewardson Township and notified authorities who discovered that burglars had also rummaged through the interior of that camp which is owned by Henry Pratt of North East, Maryland.

Anyone with information about the break-ins is asked to call the local barracks at 274-8690. Troopers at Kane are probing a burglary at Duffy Inc. on Delta Drive in East Smethport over the weekend. Thieves forced their way into the office and stole a cash box containing about $240 in cash while causing $150 in damage to the door.

Someone took a Moultrie trail camera belonging to Gre Stewart of Eldred from a wooded area east of Bullis Mills over the weekend. The camera is valued at $150.00.

And a license plate was taken from a vehicle owned by Joe Schwab of Eldred sometime over the past three weeks while it was parked at his home on the West Eldred Road.
