Mountain Legend Debunked

Photo Shows Abandoned Plane?

Clark Lerch writes: Jim – the attached satellite photo taken by “Google Earth” shows an abandoned airplane that crashed in the Hamersley Wild area about 15 years ago. The plane is about 7 miles northeast of Wharton. The area is totally inaccessible by road, guess that’s why they left the plane there.

Curt Weinhold writes:Nice archived plane photo. I learned the story last year. The plane in the photo is airborn & not crashed. It was a fluke picture taken as the plane flew by very near the same spot as the crash in the burned area of Twin Sisters in Hammersley Wild Area. You can confirm this with local EMS, that's how I learned. Sorry, you had a neat story there. It is still a neat picture.

Aviator 58 writes: This is not the actual aircraft. The a/c impacted on a heading of 284 deg. (westerly), one wing was destroyed, one ripped off, the tail separated from the fuselage and scattered over an area 380 ft long

Editor: If you look carefully at the blown up picture, you can see the plane is between the trees and the camera.

Thanks everyone for the update and correction. Very odd coincidence to say the least.
