Zippo Lays Off 46

WESB News: 10/31/08 - Zippo Lays Off 46 More People
Zippo has laid off another 46 employees, and will also be implementing a staggered four-day work week at both the Congress Street plant and downtown headquarters.

They say this is in response to the volatile business conditions in this country and around the world, and is temporary.

The staggered work week goes into effect Monday and will end as soon as possible early next year. During this period, Zippo offices will continue to be open during regular business hours.

The layoff of 46 production employees is effective Friday. Zippo has also extended annual holiday breaks, which will affect most employees at both Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Zippo’s President and CEO, Greg Booth, says “Zippo remains a strong and viable company with products that are second to none." He says they are aggressively pursuing new sales opportunites and will return to normal staffing and working hours as soon as business conditions allow.

I can't believe that this happened with the "booming" tourism income in this area....must be the tourists aren't buying Zippo lighters any more. Maybe they can all get jobs making red light bulbs so the "star gazers" will be happy.

Wonder if W R Case is next

Probable since Zippo owns Case.

you could before, it was called finding a place with a non smoking section. but your right, you dont have to do that anymore. now all we need is Rendell to ban your putrid perfume.

AMEN where does it end?

people shouldn't have to use a "non-smoking" section...smokers should have enough common courtesy to have respect for others. It's a disgusting habit and a waste of money.

If Obama wins there will be more small business layoffs than you have seen so far.

I don't smoke but believe smokers have their rights also. Why does the government have the right to do this. It's like living in Russia.

If all eateries (restaurants & bars)had better ventilation systems and exhaust fans you would not have to smell my smoke and I would not have to smell your cologne, perfume, or the grease your fries were cooked in!

Sure...blame it on the eateries that you are subjecting unwanted secondhand smoke on others. Couldn't be your fault .....could it? Perfume, Cologne, and french fries haven't been proven to be addictive or cause cancer. Jeez...it's just common sense.....I know that rat poison isn't good for me and could kill me..therefore I don't eat it!!! If you can't see that you're fighting a losing battle, you must have too much smoke in your eyes....
