Charles F. Irons, 83, Smethport, PA

Smethport - Charles F. Irons, 83, died Tuesday (December 9, 2008), after a short illness, surrounded by his family in his home in Smethport.

He was born Oct 30, 1925 in Smethport, a son of George W. and Anna Fields Irons, Jr. On April 26, 1952, in St. Elizabeth Church, Smethport, PA, he married Alice Hull, who survives.

Mr. Irons was a 1943 graduate of Smethport High School, and served in the U.S. Army during WWII.

Charles was a partner with his father at their dairy farm. He later owned and operated Irons Farm for over 50 years.

Mr. Irons was very active in many farming organizations over the years. He served as director of the McKean Conservation District, member of the McKean County Fair Board, where he had been President and an Executive Board member, and also was Dairy Superintendent and was involved with the fair’s Family Day. He was also the 4-H Dairy Club leader for many years.

He was a member of the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138 of Smethport, and local snowmobile clubs, ATV clubs, and was a strong supporter of the #25 and #50 racing teams. He also was a Smethport School Board member for 14 years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons: Thomas (Rebecca) Irons of Smethport, PA, Joseph Irons of Smethport, PA; two daughters: Judith (James) Larson of Smethport, PA, Janet (Edwin) DiFonzo of Smethport, PA ; 12 grandchildren; 3 great grandsons; one brother: Claude Irons of Crosby, PA

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Theresa (Robert) Dixon, on Sept. 10, 2004, 2 brothers, and 1 sister.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M., at Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., 2 Bank St., Smethport, PA. A Christian Wake service will be held at 3:30pm on Thursday in the funeral home.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am Friday in St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Smethport, with the Rev. Vincent P. Cieslewicz, pastor, as celebrant. Committal will be in St. Elizabeth Cemetery, Smethport. Military Honors will be accorded by the American Legion; Bucktail Post #138, Smethport.

In lieu of flowers, memorials, if desired, may be made to Potter County Hospice, St. Elizabeth Church, or to the McKean County Fair Association.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Hartle-Tarbox Funeral Homes, Inc., Smethport.
