Dueling Deer Contests!--Two Chances To Win!!

An ad in the Potter Leader-Enterprise says that there is a Big Buck Contest being held at the Sweden Valley Inn and sponsored by those two businesses.

So there are two contests just down Rt. 6 from each other.

The one at the Sweden Valley Inn is the Potter County Big Buck Contest. Free head mounts and cash prizes for top entries. Headquarters open 9 am to 8 pm Monday through Wednesday; from 5-8 pm for rest of the season.

Similar to the other contest at the Laurelwood Inn (Big Woods Whitetail Classic), there are also prizes for smallest buck and for heaviest coyote.

Differences are that the Big Woods Whitetail Classic is co-sponsored by Gore-Tex and Sweden Feedin' Club, with Endeavor News, and is open to deer and coyotes taken in Potter and Cameron counties.

The Potter County Big Buck Contest is sponsored by the Leader-Enterprise and Sweden Valley Inn and is open only to deer and coyotes taken in Potter County.

Smallest Buck? We should stop doing business with people who give a prize for the smallest buck. Thy are the ones killing our herd. Don't spend your money at their business.

The buck still needs to be legal to be entered into the contest.

The smallest buck prize is there for junior hunters and mentored youth hunters who can tag any legal buck under the old rules of 1 antler at least 3" in length.

On the risk of setting myself on fire........

Would it be a good idea to put a moratorium on deer hunting for 3+- years, to bring the herds back?

Allow only a hardship license for those who need the meat.

Hunt the predators only and to h*ll with the auto insurance co's?

Ya.. who would actually enter an illegal buck ?

Smallest buck contest more for the Jr. hunters? (that has been part of the contest for years) Don't under estimate these young/mentor hunters. My son shot a nice 8 pt @ 144 lbs & he is 10 yrs old. Looking at some of the others brought in, he has them beat by a long shot!! :)

ProudMOM....I wasn't saying that younger hunters didn't shoot big bucks, but they are the only ones that can enter a buck with less than 3 points on a side like the regular hunters have to. Junior/Mentored hunyter definitely have a much better chance to win this prize.
