Gov. Paterson Takes On Indian Sovereignty

WESB News: 12/15/08 - Paterson Signs Indian Cigarette Tax Bill

Gov. David Paterson has signed a bill to enforce collection of excise taxes on cigarettes sold at Indian-owned stores.

Paterson traveled to Utica to sign the measure earlier today. Supporters believe collecting the tax would bring the state more than $62 million a year at a time Paterson is projecting budget deficits of tens of billions of dollars over the next few years.

Indian tribes view the law as an attack on their sovereignty and financial well-being. The law prohibits manufacturers from selling tobacco products without a state tax stamp to any wholesaler that doesn't certify the cigarettes wont be resold tax-free.

The state excise tax is $2.75 per pack. State Senator Cathy Young is urging Paterson and the Seneca Nation to undertake discussions to find a peaceful and productive resolution to their differences.

Sounds like NY needs to do the same thing PA should do...down size the state government!

This is why we working people are going broke...too many government jobs and not enough tax payers to keep them all over paid.

The state excise tax is $2.75 per pack of cigarettes! And no body is upset or remarking on this?

What a joke!

Today I heard the state of NY is adding an obesity tax on all non-diet soft drinks! Are they kidding?

Smokers are lucky that they are jst taxing the cigarettes....the things are proven to be addictive and deadly...they should be outlawed.

Then I guess alcohol should be too as it is addictive and deadly!

Alcohol isn't addictive. I know a lot of people including myself, that can drink a few beers on a Friday night and not have any alcohol for weeks. If a person starts smoking, then in most cases they end up being a lifetime smoker. Secondhand smoke also affects everyone around the smoker. They should at least sell them in a more controlled environment like they do with the alcohol.

"Alcohol isn't addictive"

Tell this to the family members that have been effected and subjected to alcoholism!

Okay...point me to one! It's like blaming accidental gun deaths on the gun. Alcohol is not addictive, but alcoholism is a disease.
