Hundreds Missing Out On Tax, Rent Rebates

Less than three weeks before the deadline, more than 300 eligible older homeowners and renters in Potter County have not applied for refunds from the state under the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

Thanks in part to revenue from legalized slot machines, the state is providing a record $786 million in property tax relief this year for taxes paid in 2007. This includes expanded rebates in the senior citizen Property Tax/Rent Rebate program and the first-ever general property tax relief for all homeowners through the “Homestead Exemption,” distributed through school districts this past summer.

Deadline for those senior citizens who want to apply for a rebate this year for property taxes or rent paid in 2007 is Dec. 31. The Property Tax/Rent Rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older; widows and widowers age 50 and older; and people with disabilities age 18 and older.

Only half of Social Security income is applied to the eligibility formula. Household income limits and maximum rebate amounts for homeowners are: up to $8,000, $650 rebate; $8,001 to $15,000, $500; $15,001 to $18,000, $300; $18,001 to $35,000, $250.

Renters with incomes up to $8,000 receive a $650 rebate; those with incomes between $8,001 and $15,000 receive $500.

Further information is available by calling a toll-free phone line, 1-888-222-9190.
