Live In Fireman/College Student Charged In Thefts

Two former volunteer firefighters arrested in case of fire equipment thefts, police say

Sun Gazette

A Pennsylvania College of Technology student was one of two former volunteer firefighters arrested Tuesday on state police charges of allegedly stealing more than $75,000 worth of fire equipment from four fire companies in Columbia and Luzerne counties, according to WNEP television.

Colton Barrett, 18, who is enrolled in the college's two-year pre-emergency services program, and Matthew Cleaver, 24, of Bloomsburg, allegedly stole firefighting gear from the fire departments and then sold it on eBay, Trooper Devon Brutosky told the news station.

Efforts to reach Brutosky late Wednesday afternoon were unsuccessful.

Earlier this year, Barrett was affiliated with the Loyalsock Township Volunteer Fire Co. through a program that allows local college students who are trained as firefighters to live free at fire stations. In exchange for the free housing, the students respond to calls.

Loyalsock is just one of several volunteer fire companies that takes part in the "live-in" program.
