Counties Responsible For Inmate Medical Costs

Carbon County livid over inmate's medical bill

$43,000 tab for trip from jail to LVH plus treatment irks commissioners.

Carbon County commissioners, who have prided themselves on keeping the county fiscally sound in a difficult economy, railed Thursday about having to pay a $44,000 medical bill for a county prison inmate feared to be having a heart attack.

The unidentified inmate was found to have had seizures, said commissioners Chairman William O'Gurek, who disclosed the bill in frustration at a commissioners meeting. The inmate spent three or four days in Lehigh Valley Hospital and is back in the jail, O'Gurek said.

The costs included $32,045 for the hospital and $10,985 for transport by medical helicopter, both of which represent bills after a 60-percent cost reduction was negotiated, O'Gurek said. More...

Look at the bright side. Once he pays his $200 fine your only out $42,800. Give or take a few dollars.

Will he have to pay it back? said...

No kidding, with so many hard working tax payers that no longer can afford health insurance, bills like this would strap a family for years...guess you do not have to worry about health care if you are in jail, prison or on wealfare!

Last week I read about one part of Obama's health insurance plan, it is....giving all hospitals, doctor offices, and health care facilities a computer system that will allow all facilities up to the minute info on patients in one system. Now, there's a plan!!! So much for affordable health care. $80,000,000 that we will end up paying for, computers!

Wonder how much money will be spent on training?

Locally, and I know this first hand...too many mistakes are made in the data entering at hospitals and doctors offices. They take a quick glance at the screen and do not even bother to double check updated insurance info. or social security numbers.

I received bills for months for someone elses husband that had a simular name, should not have to do the billing departments job. It took forever to convince them "my husband had not been to that doctor or hospital" and to PLEASE double check the social security number not to mention date of birth.
But you have this in darn near every billing system...the information is only going to be as correct as it is entered!

"computer system that will allow all facilities up to the minute info on patients in one system"...hope he has the same plan for felons and illegal aliens, now that would be a plan!

If they had up to date billing systems, they would be able to track the number by swiping a credit card or drivers license. i can go to the airport and swipe my card and it spits out my tickets. The airports have the technology...why don't the Hospitals?

Should of just let the criminal die. It would of been alot cheaper and we would not had to feed him for the rest of his jail term!!!
