Don Gilliland Offers Advice

Donald writes:
Hey, I was just looking over your site, and read the county salary info... Your introduction I think is misleading. All that salary info was available under the OLD law. If you want to test the NEW law, you need to ask for something that was not covered under the old law.

It's nit picking I know - and the salary info always interests people - but it's technically not the test you say it is. What's more, Potter County has always been very good about releasing such information. Our county government really has quite a good record on open records issues, going back at least four boards of commissioners.

Thanks Donald,
You are certainly the expert when it comes to open records as you and Gerri Miller are probably most responsible for the effort to make those changes in Pennsylvania. Being a relative newcomer to the news business, I am sure I will make lots of mistakes, and I appreciate your correction. I will modify the lead to the story as I strive to accurately present the news. Fortunately, on line publishing gives us the ability to change a story if we get it wrong. Thanks for all your help over the last two years.
Jim

I bet Don will be a regular reader of this blog. It is a good news source and it's free.

Unlike the Leader Enterprise, this site is free to its readers and you don't have to wait a week between news publishings.Thank you Jim.

Donald makes alot of mistakes himself. No wonder he's so good at identifying misleading headlines.

Donald makes a lot of mistakes
and doesn't correct them. Thanks Jim for your honest open reporting
and your own personal vulnerability and openness.

Don is an excellent journalist, would make an excellent teacher, and I welcome his critique. His stories and editorials help to make the Potter Leader-Enterprise one of the best in the state. Potter County is a better place because of him.

He didn't have to call you out on your own website like that. People call him out on the newspaper, but only for his opinions, not for what he portrays as news. You were reporting facts. Donald, and The Leader, fear competition. They have it now. So they result to "critiquing" you on the way you give us our news. I haven't needed to read the Enterprise because of Solomon's Words. I'm sure I am not the only one.

Just to set the record straight...Don sent his comments to me in an email. I chose to publish it as I thought his critique was helpful to this publication. If you aren't reading the Leader-Enterprise, you are missing out on a lot of news you won't find on Solomon's words or anywhere else. It's the best newspaper value for $1.25 you can find in anywhere in Pennsylvania and I wouldn't miss reading it every week.

A $1.25 for a rag sheet? Too much for me. Who is Todd Brown? Is he the next clerk?

Anonymous said...

I actually intended it to say YOUR GRANDSON, but things don't always work out that way, in other words, What is it to you what name I put?

I'm not sure I understand the evilness of John Snyder or Todd Brown being the next clerk.

Personally, I don't think Cora was released for pure political reasons but for reasons that we will never know. But for the sake of argument let's say it was political. So what. It's a political position and political positions change with new administrations.

What is Obama doing right now with his cabinet positions? Often when a new school board is elected they go with a new superintendent. It's the nature of the beast.

Let me be clear. I mean no disrespect to Cora. I don't know Cora. She may have been the best Chief Clerk Potter County has ever had, she may have been the worst, or more likely somewhere in between. But in any government entity many (if not most) of the various dept head type positions are filled with political appointees. Some are elected on their own But when the the administration changes so do the political appointees.

Jim,
Your attitude is what makes Solomon's Blog what it is. I am so proud to be a part of this blog and read the comments and everything. I would first like to point out that I don't spend 1.25 on the paper because I don't live in the area. The second thing is that I won't subscribe online because the news is old by the time I do get it. Mr. Gilland has always treated my family okay and yet there is something so special about Solomon's Blog that makes it the greatest. I would like to see more blogs like it As for you publishing the e-mail by choice, I think that you done well and were most sincerely Christian and humble. Who can resist Solomon's blog after a man of character who is the editor and owner of such a great source of information. I would gladly pay 1.25 a week for this blog. :) Thank you again.

Don is truly a top-notch reporter and has written many outstanding articles over the years (loved his account of the Rigas trial).

its sad, however, that he loses credibility by using his pulpit to advance his personal agendas. his treatment of jeff leber was nothing sort of shameless and for a period of time the LE was just another tabloid publication.

don could do great things with his talent if he would only put down his axes and REPORT the news rather than trying to be the news.

he has hurt "many" and is self-serving.
