Ethan Allen Announces Eldred Plant Closing

ELDRED PLANT TO CLOSE
Nearly 300 Jobs Lost

The president of Ethan Allen came to the plant in Eldred Tuesday afternoon and told workers they will be closing the Eldred Ethan Allen Plant in a few weeks.

In an article by Josh Hatcher in March of 2008, Ethan Allen reported that "295 people are currently working at the Eldred plant., which includes 30 new positions that opened up in 2007.

In that article, the plant manager was quoted reporting the Eldred plant was doing well and reported plans to hire 15 to 20 more workers in 2008.

The Ethan Allen Furniture factory in Eldred turns out a little more than a thousand pieces of furniture a week. Everything is custom work for orders placed in the showrooms around the country. Hardwood for frames of sofas and chairs come from the local forests and from local loggers.

The Eldred plant is a division of Ethan Allen Incorporated in Danbury Connecticut, which has been in operation since 1932. The Eldred plant was purchased in the 1950's from Viko Furniture that made metal dinette sets.

The plant has been a workplace for many area residents for a lifetime, and although it has been subject to layoffs as the furniture business fluctuated with the economy, it has provided a good living for the skilled and dedicated employees that work there.

This will be a devastating blow to the economy of the entire area, much like the demise of Adelphia in the Coudersport area, leaving workers little options, other than leaving the area to find suitable work.

Open your eyes Northern Pennsylvania..There will be more to come just like this..This is why people move away and never return..Stop letting this happen and contact your local and State Reps.

Wow...they have been in business for as long as I can remember...that is definitely a sign of more doom to come.

Something has to change....every family in this area is being affected by companies closing...how are families going to survive when there are no jobs available. Where do you move too everywhere is feeling this crunch. Terrible! Come on America ban together and we need to fight to keep American made products in America...seriously sit around and do nothing...you will be doing nothing.

Maybe this too is the fault of the Rigas's... Why should we contact the State Reps? So that they can set these places up for bailout money? Spend more of our hard earned taxes to bailout multi-million dollar companies that pay their execiutives bonuses in the millions of dollars to run them into the ground. Sounds to me like the failing economy, nationwide has spurred companies, such as this one, to re-evaluate the cost of manufacturing and income potential and do something pro-active about it before they have to go out begging. I know it is hard on the many employees and will have a devastating effect on the community, but lets face the facts, the entire nation is going in the crapper. If the government would take half of the money that it so gleefully gives away and blows and spread it out evenly to every individual over the age of 18 in the United States, with the requirement that any debts be paid with it prior to any other new expendatures, it would stimulate an economic boom like the nation has never seen. Think about it, No more forclosures or repossesions(the gbanks would be saved), no more bad debt (the other misc. creditors would be saved), people would be able to afford to buy new cars and houses (there goes the need for bailing out the auto industry and there would be no empty houses), manufacturing would increase as people would be able to afford to buy new things... Everyone would win... But I guess that there would probably be some scumbag, or group of scumbags, out there that would figure out a way to swindle it all for themselves and screw it all up like after hurricane Katrina...
Oh well... Just a thought...

I'm just a little confused how things can go from the company "doing well" in 2007 and hiring more people in 2008 to totally shutting down in 2009. Something here stinks and doesn't make any sense. Either the company was lying then or they are lying now. Moving jobs to China maybe? I think the employees and families deserve more of an explanation.

If you or someone you know is losing their job at Ethan Allen, tell them to contact the Job Center, NOW...There is help with schooling, insurance, and job placement availible.."DON'T WAIT"

Anonymous said...

They wouldnt need more of an explanation if they watched the news , kept up with current events, or stopped believing there must be hidden motives. The economy tanked "overnight". How much more info do you need than that?

I bet the school teachers and County workers will receive a raise. Why don't we tell our School Boards and Salary Boards to hold any raises or benefits for the workers. We are losing jobs all over, how can we pay higher wages to Teachers and County workers Let them lose their jobs and see what they say.

I don't agree with a wage freeze for teachers. Without the teachers we will have poorly educated people...more than we have now. If you don't a decent wage the good teachers will go elsewhere and those that remain will be those we dont' want. I'm not sure how paying teachers has anything to do with this.

Take a look at the Hatfield McCoy trail system in WV. That is what this area needs to get into since there aren't any jobs left. Develop recreation around what we have.

Wow, I just drove past there two days ago and things looked to be hopping. It's a shame.

Exactly how your government officials could help in this matter is beyond me. Unless you want to tell them to create a more business friendly environment with lower taxes for businesses. Or maybe reduce taxes for all to allow individuals to retain and spend their own money.

As for the suggestion above advocating a freeze in salaries for teachers and County workers...Very shortsighted. You get what you pay for and education and infrastructure are attractants for folks to come and live/work in an area.

We have heard this for years. More money means better teachers. What a crock. The best wages and perks in the world and still no improvements.JUST SHUT UP AND PAY YOUR TAXES. What teacher cares.

Must be teachers writing since all the schools were closed today.

No teacher here, just someone who fears what happens when good teachers go elsewhere. Take a look around at your neighbor and this community. WIthout teachers I fear what would happen to many of these children. As I walk through the school to pikc up my kid I can't believe the dead beats I see...the dirty kids. I just love it when parents who don't work with their kids, send them to school dirty, etc complain about teachers. Without them your kids would be even worse. Just as with any job there are some bad eggs but they shouldn't give all teachers a bad rap.

I'm not a teacher and I work with my share of idiots but I don't think that should stop me from getting a raise, nor do I see how that has anything to do with a plant closing, a business man running a cable company into the ground etc.

What seems to be missing is OWNERSHIP and ACCOUNTABILITY

WOW!!!!!!!

From Regis to economy to teachers to people living at home to dirty kids.

Thank Wal Mart,China,Gas Prices, Big business,And so on

If we don't see a complete revolt in the hear future the only thing that we will need to teach our children is to shoot
Aim Small Miss Little, Remember???

contacting the Governor, state reps, and state senators across the region is a good idea. The Commonwealth of Pa. needs to slash taxes facing individuals and businesses. The excessive regulatory regime makes it challenging to do business in Pa. also. Personally supporting local businesses whether they be mom & pop shops or manufacturers is a way you can help stem this tide too.

What a shame, and someone actualy told me Couderpsort was better off for me being gone, well, I am actually better off being gone from there and all those nearby communities, I am laid off, but I am also going to get schooling paid for here in Steuben County, NY....I wish those people nothing but the best and it is time for the Job Centers of Potter and McKean county to grab the bull by the horns and tag team with the State to find a way to help 300 people and their families.

Must be why Ethan Allen built a new factory in Mexico. 1+1=2

Anonymous said...

I do not know if they did build a plant in Mexico, but if they did, it is only due to the beurocrats allowing NAFTA to exist... Our beloved government claims that they have the best interest of the citizens of teh US in mind, but is nothing more than big buisness without reprocussions of loss... I don't think China (being a porr example) would be nearly as well of financially as they are, if they allowed free trade. You cannot buy anything in China (excepting on the black market) that was made in another country unless it isn't made there. The will not allow an import to exist if it can be made there... I am not saying to follow a Communist country by example, before you right wings even get started... I am merely stating that if we can buy something or produce something in or from another country for less than we can produce it here, it makes good buisness sense to do it as cheap as possible... It does not take much of a drop in production cost to equal a significant increase in gross profit... Is it right? NO... Is it fair? NO... Does it suck that it means that more Americans will lose their source of income when the economy is so poor and most around here live from paycheck to paycheck? ABSOLUTELY... There is where you can get your government officials involved... If you want to see buisnesses stop going to foreign countries to save a buck, get them to revoke NAFTA... Does this mean that companies like Ethan Allen will not move to another state or city? Of course not, they will still go where it is cheapest to produce... But it will mean that even though someone here, someone local, someone you know, may lose their job, you may find a little comfort in knowing that he is being replaced by someone else that probably needs it just as bad as him but it isn't in another country... I too know people that work there. I am sure that their families will be devastated and things are going to be real difficult for a while... But , most will overcome the hardship, and hopefully find replacement employment locally. Others, like when Adelphia tanked, will have to make some hard descisions and possibly relocate... Tough times call for drastic measures. Maybe, we ewill get lucky and someone will talk the state into creating a KOZ there and possibly draw a new corporation in to take Ethan Allens place. I am sure that the property has some value for manufacturing something... I hope that everyone affected by this terrible situation does well and makes it through it all...

Hold on now! Its not that NAFTA is the problem' its the Greed that comes w/the big wigs that once they start rolling in the $$$ they don't give a crap about about those that get them there! The CEO's and EXEC.'s are the ones that make that decision to go somewhere else instead of staying here and making America what it use to be. The government didn't twist their arm and told them they had to go. But again' when you vote tree huggers in office like Al Gore and they make demands on corporations to meet unmeetable standards to slow the "Global Warming" and tax them for this and that, it tends to make a guy think twice. But again, I believe if your a true blooded American, you will do all you can to protect the jobs of your fellow Americans. But now to make sure we all share the blame in the jobless problem, how about our Unions that have gotten way out of hand. Making demands that cannot be met w/out making a corporation go under. Look at the UAW. These people are making way more than should be allowed. Look at the retirement packages! Everybody has gotten the bad case of "the me me's". When we all start thinking of ourselves before the interest of others, we are destined to kill or ruin ourselves as a nation from w/in. In other words, we are our own worst enemy. No nation has to drop a bomb on us. They just step back and watch us eat each other so to speak. I believe this is how we as a nation will come to ruins. Financially. We are seeing it happen right now. We need to get back to the basics, get back to making ethical decisions we need to get back to God and reading His word. So instead of pointing the fingers at everyone else, remember that you have 3 fingers pointing back at you!

i personally was affected by this shut down.. and yes the company did lie they knew in april that we were nearing the end during negotiations..the manager himself did not he was going on hope the vp of EA did though..and yes they did purchase a plant in mexico and yes that is partly why we lost our jobs..they had full intentions of cutting jobs in certain depts with closer of the uph depts. later however the economy situation made the closing of the plant a little sooner..

Another point of interest about all these businesses going out of the USA to start up is...if they fail and lose their ass guess what? They can come back to the good ole USA debt free and start all over again!

As I see it...you could have went to college to be a teacher or you could have applied for a county position...either way if you didn't that was your personal choice. The only reason you hear about teachers and local government workers is because their wages are publicized and yours isn't. I have never seen wages of local factory workers. I know some get paid over $25/hr and guess what... tax payers pay for that too..Why? You ask because we as tax payers buy the goods they make or use their services. So as I see it you only complain about the people who have to show what they make and be accountable for it. I think that is a little unfair to those people. I pay insurance out of my paycheck as a taxpayer and guess what the doctors get that money...I don't see their wage (fine with me just making a point) ... so in response to your comment there should be a wage freeze...maybe you should go back to school or get a job where we can judge you on your preformance and all your neighbors will know how much you make. WAY TO GO TEACHERS..your priceless to me...your raising my children 8 hours a day and doing a great job. To the local government workers keep pounding it out...we live in a COMMONWEALTH which means the local government runs our state. You deserve more than what you all are paid. I know you work hard and all the people that are complaining are just kicking themselves in the butt because they wanted more money from Adelphia and wouldn't apply for these small paying jobs but now there out of work you guys are paid too much....funny huh?

So they put a factory in mexico...same as level 3 is outsourcing tons of work to india..with both, quality of product/service hits rock bottom and with any hope, consumers won't accept the shoddy products and services that mexico and india provide to the US...Too bad the national news doesn't cover all of this more thoroughly...So share the news and tell everyone to never buy ethan allen again - the quality sure won't be there!

Or it could have been the Coudersport Boro Workers..

If you're going to post please get the facts straight. They bought the plant in Mexico. Beyond that, our representatives need to step up and do what they can to keep the companies we have left. I have been unemployed for nearly 2 weeks...and am afraid to see the rest of McKean and Potter County shut down.
