Extension and Conservation District Team Up for Agricultural Information Session The McKean County Conservation District and Penn State Cooperative

The McKean County Conservation District and Penn State Cooperative Extension are co-sponsoring an Equine Informational Seminar and Crop Production and Pesticide Update Meeting on Thursday, January 29, 2009, at the Gethsemane Lutheran Church Hall on Arnold Avenue in Port Allegany. A free luncheon will be provided.

The morning session is also free and is targeted at area horse owners. There is a fee for the afternoon session targeted at individuals needing pesticide update credits.

The meeting will begin at 9:00 AM. Participants are asked to contact the McKean County Conservation District Office at 814-887-4001 or the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office of McKean at 814-887-5613 to pre-register by Wednesday, January 16, 2009. The meeting will be worth two core and two category pesticide update credits for private applicators to maintain their certification. Participants are welcome to attend the morning, afternoon, or whole day session.

The morning guest speakers include Beth Futrick from the PA Agricultural Ombudsman Program who will talk about Pasture Management and Other Best Management Practices for Horses. Also, Jamie Ulrich from the State Conservation Commission will talk on Equine Nutrient Management Regulations.

The afternoon guest speakers include area farm agency representative updates, a Cultural Weed Control talk by Dean Sprague, Field and Forage Crops Extension Educator with Cornell Extension, Pesticide Safety Presentations by local Extension Educator, Jim Clark and a Crop Insurance Update by a Risk Management Specialist with the USDA Risk Management Office.

Financial and other support for this project is provided by the Pennsylvania Association of Conservation Districts through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act, administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
