It Will Cost Motorists $2. To Cross Reservation On New York Thruway

Senecas fighting back with toll booths

IRVING - Seneca Nation of Indians officials announced Tuesday they are now looking to construct toll booths along the New York State Thruway in reaction to the state’s effort to tax cigarettes destined for discount smokeshops.

Barry Snyder, Seneca president, outlined actions the tribe will take to protect its treaty rights and economic health in the wake of recent state legislation. “New York state is stifling our $313 million retail sector, which affects more than 1,000 jobs, and is trampling on our treaty rights,” Mr. Snyder said. “As we said, this would not go unchallenged.”

After a Tribal Council vote on Jan. 10, Snyder said Seneca officials have authorized him to take several actions: More....

This is a total Black & White issue. There is no gray portion. The goverment is breaking the treaty with the taxes so the indian nation has to do what they have to do to make this whole situation right. I just hope that the goverment figures out what they are doing and how wrong it is befor its to late. I also think this whole situation could get so out of control so fast that it is not funny. I hope it all works out for the best.

Honor Treatises!

Tax the tobacco and toll the road! The choice to smoke and pay the tax is for each individual to make. There are other routes to avoid that bumpy, pothole road! I'm sure the little towns would love to have business back since the expressway took away their $ away.

Those freaking Indians need to realize the war is over. They are just taking advantage at this point. It isn't the 1800's anymore. They should have to do everything that "normal" citizens do including paying taxes. I am sick of hearing about how they were treated bad.. TOUGH!!!

I thought the war ended because we signed a treaty.

Why wouldn't we honor that treaty.

Can I go to some farm that has been owned by a family for over a hundred years and say "you know what I am going to take this land now. I know you have a deed for it, but that deed was signed over a hundred years ago and I think it should have expired by now".

This is really basic contract law here and the Seneca's are on the right side of the law.

The indians have also broken the treaty...this isn't a one way deal.

Did the indians receive social security benefits when the reached the age of 18 when the treaty was signed?

They do now, so I guess if that was not part of the deal 100 years or so ago it should be stopped as well.

Yeah, you guys are right. Let's round up all of the indians, volunteer fire department personnel, and doug morely and have a giant bonfire with them.

I think the Senecas will go along with the taxes, but we then have to be prepared to go along with paying tolls to use the road through their property.

We have to honor treaties. Plan and simple. It just doesn't expire folks.

Indians are not the only ones to suffer at the hand of our great oversized, overpaid government.

What about taxation without representation?

Christ, if a car changes hands 4 times in its life sales tax gets paid to the state all 4 times!

We should honor the traty.....word for word! This would abolish all social security payments to the nayive americans and free college programs too. If it's not in the treaty then we shouldn't have to do it. They can sit on their reservation and do their thing....just quit mooching off of the American taxpayer. They can't put up a toll on any road through the reservation because it is in the treaty.

Jack B Nimble it is not through that treaty that benifits are recified.
Stop spreading rumors.
Honor the treaty.

I wonder if they still take beads and trinkets as payment?
