Julie Writes.............

A letter to the Editor-Publisher of this site:

Dear Mr. Jones,

I enjoy reading your blog and I think that you do a wonderful job
with it,
but lately I can't help but notice that the comments have
been so
negative.

Negativity is the last thing we need right now in these

extremely hard economic times. I understand that some of us
have very
stressful lives and many things are hard to deal with
in life, but
complaining and passing judgment are only making
things worse.

To me,
Potter County has always been a very happy, fun and
friendly place to
live. What has changed to make so many of
us bitter, unhappy, angry or
jealous? Sure, there are issues
that arise, but that is everywhere. No
one is ever going to be
completely satisfied 100% of the time.

I feel that you should stop accepting anonymous comments
under the
reasoning that it is becoming too easy for the
anonymous posters to attack
people (or organizations)
without revealing themselves.

When a person
knows that their identity will be posted along
with their personal
opinion, they tend to think a little harder
about what they are really
trying to say. Everyone is entitled
to their own opinion, but I think
they also need to be responsible
for what they are saying instead of just
“flying off the handle”
and expressing personal judgment on petty issues.

9 times out of 10 if the reader has a little time to think before
reacting
instantly and looking at the issues at hand from all
angles, they tend to
be less judgmental.

If you still want to allow people to post
anonymously, then you
should consider only printing comments that you (as
the
moderator) feel add something meaningful to the discussion.

I think
this model would work well for this blog.

To all you posters out there, please keep in mind that "Behind
every
argument is someone's ignorance." -- Louis D. Brandeis

Agreed, except for the part about the moderator having to censor and decide whether a comment is "meaningful" or not.
Require each poster to come out from wherever he or she is hiding and supply a name and email address.
The sad part of the situation now is that a handful of naysayers are creating a tone or an image or a picture of the public's opinion that does not reflect reality or a consensus.
There is only one way to halt that and it would be in the best interests of the community and the county to do that: require people to take RESPONSIBILITY for their opinions and comments.
PLEASE consider that strongly Mr. Moderator.

Anonymous said...

Amen ~could not have said this better myself! I think the general public is a lot braver when making an "anonymous" statement.

Pete Tasher said...

Funny how the first 2 people commenting still posted themselves as "anonymous". If you're going to say something, then do it! Even the writer of the article only posted their first name.

Anonymous said...

The comments are the best thing to read on here! Funny!

Anonymous said...

Now Pete, that was awesome!!! Yeah, I mean, those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Now, Jim I am sorry for giving the impression that Donald was wrongfully criticizing you. I should have looked at it through your perspective. You posted his response. Enough said. You think of him that much to do that. That means that you appreciate the feedback. So, I stand corrected. Yes, alot of things on here are now becoming burning issues. Many topics, including John Rigas, a search and rescue, etc.. are creating not necessarily a bad thing. These things are getting people to talk, and express feelings that a newspaper cannot, simply because it cannot print all of it. As a journalist, you want reactions to the things you write. But we need to remember to post opinions about the article we are reading, not to branch off from it and begin an argument about something else that is just a waste of Jim's time. He has to approve or deny such posts, and it takes time. So let's be respectful of him, as he has been and will be to us. Once again, thank you Jim very much for keeping us all informed and giving us the opportunity to be opinionated, and heard.

Justin

Sadly anonymous posters post do so
for many different reasons. My reasoning is that I've had some
unfair and false tales told about me by the current printed media
in town.

I have been burned and do not
want to be burned further. Many
of us just print anonymously
because we do not want to be
treated poorly at all. Most of the people who do IDENTIFY themselves do so under false names.
So how is that an improvement at all.

Maybe nasty rude comments should not be posted if they do not
enhance the dialogue.

Keeping the dialogue going in an interesting manner seems to be what matters and some of the subjects are a bit dicey. For instance if one posts with their
real name and feels that the shopkeepers do not do a good job of keeping their sidewalks clean, then you are in trouble with people who you may like but would
not be able to speak so freely to.
Sorry but Anonymous works.

And, Julie, I do not believe
their is ignorance behind every
well worded argument...otherwise
there would not be public dialogue at all on any subject. I will look up that quote and see if it's complete. Thanks

Welcome to the Internet! From the beginning of the net people have mostly posted semi anonymously or under handles. If you don't like it don't read it, not everything in real life is flowers and bunnies. It is amazing this blog has grown to the current readership and participation level that it has. If people start finding that their comments are getting deleted by a moderator it is not going to help things any. Trying to control what people say is not going to make you any friends, it is just the type of thing thing to drive people away. I like seeing what people really think whether I agree with it or not. Just because you don't like what they say does not mean they should be censored.

Mr. Tasher,

I did not specify how to list my name to Mr. Jones. I have nothing to hide. My name is Julie Thompson, I have lived in Potter County for most of my life and I can't help but notice that people are taking things way too personal on this blog. I totally agree with the first poster that the negative comments are setting an image for the rest of the community. Half the time they don't even check the spelling or grammar of their posts which really comes off as uneducated (for lack of a better term).

I understand that people have a right to freedom of speech, but I feel that the moderator must provide some type of protection from imminent or potential violence against particular persons or organizations (restrictions on Hate speech or fighting words), or the use of untruths to harm others (slander). There seems to be a lot of that lately.

Solomon's words for the wise said...

I feel obliged to advise you that post that have excessive unacceptable language, those that are potentially libelous, that promote violence and those that make accusations against others not in elected offices will not be published. If your post contains any of these things, it will not be posted, even if the majority of the post is acceptable. We are not able to delete any portions of your post, only in it's entirety.

People are posting their opinions. You may agree, you may disagree. The only reason that anyone would care to know just who has a certain opinion, is for retaliation or censorship. This site is not run as an advertisement for the counties. It is for information, and opinions on that information. Why do you need to know the name of the person that has an opinion different than yours?Look around, things are not all sunshine and flowers. All opinions hold some value.Take what you want from them and don't sweat the rest.My OPINION.

I do not care for Blogs...
But Jim does an outstanding job
and I believe that for too long people in Potter County have possibly failed to stand up for themselves and voice an opinion.
I might be wrong but if this
forum gives people the courage
to encounter then that's a very
good thing anonymous or not.

Thanks Jim for an outstanding contribution to our community.

If you don't like the comments, don't read them.

Mr. Jones,

I must agree with the original letter by Julie when it comes to the increased negativity on the blogs lately. I told my wife that I don't even want to read the blog anymore. Lately its been a couple of things:

One: some of the comments do get your blood pressure up and you do want to put down your immediate response which for me is not the smartest thing to do.

Two: I don't mean this to be harsh, but some of the bloggers comments just are immature-sounding and childlike. This makes us in Potter County and the surrounding area sound like... well whatever you want to call it, to the rest of the viewers. When we use the privilege to comment on a site like this it represents who and what we are around here. I believe in good hearty discussion. It helps us see each others' views on things such as the "Wind Turbines". When viewers can bring forth intelligent facts and not fabrications or hearsay it helps us better understand things that are important in our community. So I've made the decision that from now on I will be posting my name with something I comment on, or not comment on it at all. I hope all of us stop and think before we post something, asking ourselves " am I willing to post my name with the comment(s) I just made?"
Again Mr. Jones, thank you for a great website and all the great things that are contained in it. Very informative.

Keep up the great work!

Mr Negative said...

If there were no negativity in the world, there would be nothing positive. I like the way the site is just the way it is...it is all in the way people interpret the posts as to whether they are immature or not...that is your opinion. I will continue to read the blog and I'll post my opinion if I feel like it and I'll post the same name that I always do. This is the USA and it's 2009...people need to quit being so sensitive to insignificant things. I prsonally like the freedom to vioice my opinion without worrying that everything I say is not "politically correct".

Anonymous said...

The nice thing about blogs is that, if I read something on here I don't agree with, at least I didn't pay $1.25 for wasting my time.

Anonymous said...

Consider this...
If the authors name is attached to his or her opinion,it is likely that some opinions would carry more weight than others because of a persons notority, station in life, past accomplishments, wealth, etc. As it is now, they must be read and taken at face value. This is a good forum and should be left alone.

you don't have to read the comments unless you choose to. that's what's nice about it. only read the news etc if you so desire. let people make their comments and those who choose to read them can. I get my news here before anywhere else and it's local... can't even turn on tv and do that. and its updated often.
Thank you Mr Jones.

Mr. Negativity,
You should also learn to proofread your work before you submit it. Also, as to you saying without negativity, there would be no positive things, could you give us proof? Back that up?
Let me give you proof of something positive coming about without negativity. Hypothetically speaking, a happily married couple conceive a child. Nine months later, the child is born. This is something positive. Where, in the last 9 months, was the negativity that created this positive?
What you said was irresponsible and way wrong. If you have family, you would know that you don't need negativity to create positive results. I have a family and nothing negative created the family I have. I would not trade them for the world. You need to rethink what you said. I took offense to it, yes.

This forum is just fine the way it is. Keep up the good work.

Mr Negative said...

J Cochran....my point was that if there were no such thing as negative, then positive would not exist. It is a common fact that every action has an opposite reaction....if there was no "up" then there also would be no "down". It was a philosophical answer in other words. If there is a positive side to something, then there obviously has to be a negative side....sort of like a battery. Again...whether a post is considered positive or negative is all in the opinion of the reader. You are right that I should proof read my posts before I submit them....I apologize for my typos if that offends you....."to err is human"

Anonymous said...

And to forgive is $30.00. Hey look man, you don't need negative to create positive. You can't compare life to an Interstate Battery. I asked you for a situation in human life where you need negativity to create positive things, rather than have something be positive all the while. I'm sorry, but you can have positive without negative. It's hard to comprehend, but it's definetely true. I got laid off from my job. I am going to school now, courtesy of the place that laid me off. So I consider the layoff positive, because it creates another positive situation for me as to where I can further my education and create more opportunity for myself and my family.

Anonymous said...

And one more thing. You said, "It is a common fact that every action has an opposite reaction....if there was no "up" then there also would be no "down"." The fact is for every action, there is a reaction. It does not have to be opposite. So the common "fact" you speak of is simply a common belief.

ACTION: A person provides a website for people to access local news and information and leave opinions.
REACTION: People read the website and leave opinions.

No "opposite reaction", just reaction. In other words, you don't need negativity to form a positive.

Anonymous said...

I believe the way that is supposed to be stated is........For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.

In response to this post, I would like to comment that I don't want to tell who I am just for the sake someone who is just nosey! Those who are expecting Jim to disregard anonymous comments just because there is curiousity is asking too much from a public who reads "Solomon's Blog."
Jim moderates our posts. The service is free so far and it is his blog. Jim has done a lot for us by creating this blog and I am sure that those of us who enjoy and take the time to read the posts are quite proud to have a blogger who even allows comments. I am very proud to be on Solomon's Blog and yes even read the anonymous posts. I am responsible before GOD and Jim for what I say and his sponsors. If those advertising are fussing with our posts then most certainly it would justify having a name but if they aren't then I don't see what the fuss is. This is quite honestly a great blog and I am proud of Jim and all he contributes to keeping us informed. Sadly some can't resist criticizing instead of encouraging.

I just think if people don't like our anonymous post on Jim's blog then that is a problem they need to deal with as long as Jim is moderating. :)

I choose to remain anonymous just because I feel it is in my best interest. I also a good response versus reaction! Jim has proved his discernment in these matters.

I choose not to be a critic but an encourager!

Julie, if the moderator did what you asked and filtered content according to what HE felt was meaningful ... I bet you would soon write a letter complaining that your own views weren't being posted. Meaningful content is in the perception of the reader, it depends on which side of the fence your standing. Read your own post about the "all angles"......

Anonymous postings allow the full spectrum and benefit of free press and free speech. If you don't them, exercise your free right to not read them or take them serious. I think the comments are more truthful and expressive when left anonymous. It's Jim's blog and ultimately he can choose to post or not post. Personally I like what he's done here. Seems to me like a lot of people are either too sensitive, take themselves too serious, or don't possess the ability to think for themselves. Lighten up. It's a Blog. This has been posted by an Anonymous Blogger!!!!

I have read and re-read these blogs and my take on this matter is, if you do not like the way Jim has his web site set up then start your own.

And I am not saying that to be mean, check out the side bar on his site, thousands of readers have read and blogged on his local news site and the proof is in the punch. The numbers have gone up each and every month, so must he people like this site the way it is.

If it ain't broke don't fix it! :)

Jim
it appears you avoid blogs that do not serve your political interests. if a blogger "knows" that you are printing lies from others and brings it out to you - you refuse to print the correction. these are not harmful, just truthful. Are you opposed to truth? check out the information and you will see. you haven't been in Potter County long enough to know the players and hopefully will discover how the system works here. you never mention at least two other commissioners - one attends YOUR church and one FEEDS you info directly from the courhouse. do you think comments about these 2 are out of bounds? all 3 posted a ridiculous letter for reasons for firing Cora. this is just plain rambling on and on to justify what they planned from day one. check out what is planned for another employee and the job. check and see what job has been promised to that individual who is another county employee who is about to get blindsided. ask some questions! talk to the sheriff about his connection. talk to the treasurer because she has told all. you favor some comments and turn away others. the commissioners promised change but the taxpayers had no idea what they were up to - they are out for themselves and their cronnies. it is obvious who some of the bloggers are - at least it is to some of us who know their motives and style. these commissioners have lied to all taxpayers. 3 year cannot come too soon and even YOUR church will not be able to help. as good as you are - you are not as wholesome and perfect as you would like all to believe. now, can you take criticism?

I agree that a name should be sent with a comment. If all comments are posted here with no names than that is up to Jim. But if there is false information given and someone wants to look into it, they can atleast contact Jim to find out were the post came from. Someday this website will go to far and trouble will be right around the corner. If people want to be so negative against another, please just call that person and tell them how you feel. It doesn't have to be done on a local news website!!

Have you ever left the area Julie...? Potter County is one of the coldest and unfriendly places to live. In this little town, it is more of whom you know than what you have to offer, Many of the comments are immature but look around... Most people with college educations leave because most people here have poor grammar and are immature and they have little respect for races other than their own. To be frank, many people just feel they are better than everyone else... And give the impression when asked for names of who posted a comment.... “do you know who I am.. You can’t say that about me.... Bla bla“

The comments are the main thing I read and love it because people are frank about their opinion... and as an african American Chris Rock said... “Keeping it real” but you would not know anything about that because you are from Potter County and still call them “The big N wood”
