Petitions Available To Support John Rigas Commutation

Petitions supporting a request for a commutation of John Rigas's sentence are available at the Crittenden and the Maple Tree in Coudersport for people who would like to sign it.

Since January 20 is rapidly approaching, people wanting to sign at one of these locations should do so by this weekend.

Grassroots Effort Seeks Presidential Commutation For John Rigas

Due to the considerable number of persons, who have contacted the Rigas family, urging an effort to request a commutation of John Rigas's sentence, the family has proceeded to have the necessary papers filed on Monday. Anyone who would like to write a letter to President Bush to recommend John's commutation, may send them as below.

The time remaining for President Bush to act is extremely limited, so time is of essence in this effort. A few minutes of your time and your prayers may have a profound effect on the life of this man who tried to do so much for the people of Potter County and the surrounding area.

People wanting to support the Commutation request of John Rigas should send their letters to the following address:

Lizette Benedi
Bancroft Associate PLLC
1919 M Street, NW
Suite 470
Washington, DC 20036

However, the letters should be addressed to the President as follows:

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20036

The Bancroft Associate group will assemble the letters and send them as a group. Thank you.

For those that care to watch: An interview by Charlie Rose of John Rigas just before he went to prison. It's long but interesting.

Does anyone have an address of where to send a negative comments about John Regas and would like to see him stay in jail where he belongs?

When are we going to make someone take the full punishment for a crime that they committed and were convicted of? No wonder the country is in such a mess. Corporate greed needs to be stopped, what does a pardon or commutation of a sentence send to other current or potential offenders?

Anonymous said...

Is it really necessary to send a white collar crimimal to the big house for years and years where you and I can pay for their incarceration? Hit them where it counts, in their CHECKBOOKS and make them sit at home. That way we can focus on locking up the child molesters and murderers that seem to get out early due to over crowding and etc then subsequently repeat their offenses!

I would send it directly to the President.

The Honorable George W. Bush
President of the United States
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20036

He probably won't read it, but hey, you tried.

Not to be ignorant but why would many of us want him out of jail. Because of what he and his sons have done many of us former employees are still struggling to find means to support our families!!

Yes he did alot for Coudersport at first but look at it now. Look at the amount of homes for sale and people looking for work! He can stay right where he is as far as I'm concerned!!!

YeLet me tell you all a true story about an irresponsible man who wrecked a motorcycle while he was drinking, the motorcycle uninsured, and the passenger on it was someone's mother, who as a result lost her life. She did not know he was under the influence. This man had an epileptic seizure while driving and wrecked causiong great injury to himself and the loss of someone else's life. And this man completely denied wrong doing and in the meantime ran the victim's family down. This "man" went to prison for 7 years. I would like all of you to honestly tell me that blatant disregard for human life is worth only 7 years in the justice system. I mean is it? Is the fact that a man who could not even look the judge or the family in the eye and say he was sorry for taking something from someone, worth only 7 years? Neither my friend or his brother and sister will have their mother back, a husband will not have his wife back, a brother will not have his sister and more importantly, many people won't get their friend back. There is no price on human life. People such as these, and child molesters, etc.. real criminals with no regard for decency or family or life, they get no more than 10 years. Now no matter your view on John, whether he did right or wrong, what he didn't do was take a human life, he did not take something that cannot be replaced. And they give him 15 years, but give a man to whom this very day, will not apologize for what he did to a family and the victims friends...he walks free now ...what is wrong with the criminal justice system in this picture? I just don't believe, in my heart, 18 years in prison is humane if you did not take something from someone that could not be replaced. Im sorry but I just feel John deserves better than someone who could care less about human life.

I'll get right on that. NOT!

Maybe all anti RIGAS PEOPLE SHOULD STOP SHOPPING AND EATING AT THESE LOCATIONS THAT WANT PEOPLE TO SIGN THE PETITION

Anonymous said...

Both of the anti-Rigas people?

I think I would be more willing to see John let go, if he came out and only had enough "assets" to provide him with a nominal income, so he & his wife could get by.

Still retaining control over millions of dollars puts a little sting into the equation.

"Look at the amount of homes for sale and people looking for work!"

Yes...look at the homes for sale!! It wasn't John that inflated all of the local real estate prices..it was the greedy property owners that wanted to make a quick buck. I know that a lot of local businesses never got completely paid from Adelphia whemn it went under, but nobody ever says much about all of the money that the town businesses made for the 10 years that Adelphia was booming. I think that the state of the area is more to blame on how the local people acted and they are just looking for a scapegoat to blame for the bad times. John did not deserve to be sentenced to 15 years....I don't think he should have went to jail at all.As far as people looking for work...geez..it has been years since this happened...if people a re still looking for maybe they need to look in a different place.

Thank You John Q. Public.
I believe that given the chance John Rigas would have made things right. He is a good man and did not deserve the way our government handled the situation. He has all my support, I am very sad about the misery that John and his family have been put thru.
Sincerely,

Enough of the Rigas Family. Let's get on with life.

Amen John Q,
If the local people didn't want obsecene amounts of money for their property than maybe today local people that want to own a home could afford to live around here.

Right on John Q Public and the post that follows him! Thanks to the businesses supporting the petition! Those of you that really think that John got a fair trial;probably beleive that O.J. Simpsson was innocent of murder!?Only a few acknowledge the fact that the auditors, lawyers, banks, etc. sighned off on everything they did when the govt. initiated the new accuonting rules at the time!God bless John and his family and forgive those who think it was all his fault and want him to die in prison!I pray the govt. never sets thier sites on them! There's a lot of us out here that know ol john got "BUSH" WHACKED!!Propaganda is a powerfull tool for the govt. Of course they don't want you to know this whole thing against the Rigas' and the whole (low voter area) region was planned and executed to take attention off themselves and thier crooked buddies!Get a grip! But, I'm probably wasting my time cause,if the govt.says it's so;it must be,right? Whatever!! B. Jones

Hey, put a petition at the Zito Media local office & there will be THREE businesses supporting the petition!! Maybe you will get 15 signatures instead of 10.. And Shirley.. it's no fair signing all the petitions !!!

WHAT? It's simple supply and demand. It's how capitalism works. If there are two houses for sale and five people looking, the price goes up. Greedy property owners? Get serious.

Give us proof JMHO..

Five people weren't always looking for homes JMHO, it was more about supply than demand....lots of new homes were built, ask Gus Lefevre....
Now, the population of Coudersport, and Potter County for that matter, never drastically increased so I need to see where the supply and demand meant anything as far as ridiculous property rates. It simply was builders and landowners willing to sell to them looking to cash in on beatiful homes the likes of which Potter County was never used to. Homes meant for the Hamptons, being built on Dividing Ridge Rd and Rt. 872 and in other outskirts of Coudersport...greed was everywhere long before Adelphia's collapse.

JMHO said...

"Five people weren't always looking for homes JMHO, it was more about supply than demand"

There were LOTS of people looking for homes and even to a greater extent apartments. Believe me. I supplied both. The local builders couldn't build either fast enough. Do you honestly think prices of real estate go up when the supply outpaces the demand? No. It's just the opposite. Prices fall. Like I said, simple capitalism.

I already wrote the letter to Bush. Maybe he can do one thing right as president.

Anonymous said...

Lol! Amen to that! Hey Dick Chaney! How bout puttin a Haliburton War Terminal in Potter County to make up for you and Bushwacker's assault on Potter County,s economy! Brad

JMHO,
All I am saying is that there are too many empty houses sitting and the landowners and people that built them can't blame John Rigas for the state in which they find themselves now. These are the people that took advantage of the opportunity he created by establishing a near Fortune 500 company in Coudy. Those people seen dollar signs just the same as anyone would. Now nobody can afford to own a home around here and there is nothing worth moving here for anyhow. Builders and landowners got a little to eager to build build build and sell sell sell. There is no housing boom anymore, why is that? Nobody moving to Couderpsort, why is that? You defend Coudersport quite a bit, but what does it have to offer any kind of talent that would move there? You seem to have all the answers for everybody's opinion on here, so what are you going to do to start changing things for the better JMHO? Maybe you are on a committee, good for you. Hopefully you can help restore the image Coudy once had. I would think it would be kind of hard though given the fact that the area's only thriving business is the probation department. Can't build around that now can we. Tell me a way capitalism can benefit Coudy now since you seem to know all about it. If you can, help be a part of it.

Weird how we got off the subject of the article. Don't do the crime if you can't do the time period. I agree the legal/justice system is messed up. I mean we let child molesters out on bail so they can move to another city and molest more children? I thought that Potter County had more common sense than the federal system. Guess there is corruption everywhere and it needs to be stopped. Sorry but I dont feel anyone should be released unless evidence and a retrial/appeal prove them innocent.

JMHO said...

"You seem to have all the answers for everybody's opinion on here, so what are you going to do to start changing things for the better JMHO?"

Wrong. I seem to have an opinion, exactly like you, and everyone else does on here.

"All I am saying is that there are too many empty houses sitting and the landowners and people that built them can't blame John Rigas for the state in which they find themselves now."

Well now that's debatable. He was "The buck stops here" guy and was ultimately responsible for the operations of his company. Lots of people invested time and money in Coudersport believing Adelphia was being run on the up and up. It wasn't now, was it?

"Builders and landowners got a little to eager to build build build and sell sell sell."

There is an old saying about boarding the ship when its in port. We had, for the better part of ten years a boom economy in Coudy. Most people took advantage of that. Good for them. I will be able to sit on my front porch one day when I'm 70 and say I tried. I would hate to be part of the crowd that says I wished I would have.

"Tell me a way capitalism can benefit Coudy now since you seem to know all about it."

Well, capitalism is working as it was designed to. There are few people looking for houses and apartments currently. The supply of both exceeds the demand. Guess what happens to the price? Think about it.

Well, I get you on supply and demand. But how can you blame John for inflated prices? When demand is there, you supply. When it's not...well..you know. I know you are a respected buinessman, but I have been taught to give credit where credit is due and we should be thankful, even though it sucks for you and others, that we were given John Rigas. Without him, what would Coudersport have been? Exactly what it is now.

I couldn't agree with you more. It's just too bad it didn't continue.

People are getting awfully worked up about a man that ruined the town with his promises that he never fulfilled. He should have kept it a private company and then he and his family full of crooks wouldn't be having this problem. Keep him in jail.
