Senecas To Increase Thruway Tolls To $2.

Senecas to Collect Thruway Tolls

The Seneca Nation will start collecting tolls on the New York State Thruway in response to state taxes on wholesalers who deal with Indian retailers.

The Tribal Council has authorized an action for an advisory opinion to declare the Thruway an illegal invasion of soverign Nation terriorty, and increase the current toll to $2.

Seneca President Barry Snyder says the Tribal Council has authorized him to spend as much as $1 milllion to retain emergency response personnel; help with medical care to Nation residents; make sure children can get to school; and that all residents can go about their daily activities without interference.

They didn't say when the toll will go into effect. The Senecas say the impositon of state taxes on wholesalers who deal with them would pose a grave threat to to their livelihood.

I think we should give the indians some horses, bows and arrows and just close off the reservation so no outsiders can get in and bother them. They could fend for themselves and take care of their own livlihood.

Get real. Why are we still paying for something that happened hundred of years ago? We didn't create this.

Get real. Why are we still paying for something that happened hundred of years ago? We didn't create this." Our government (you know the one, "of the people, by the people, for the people") did and the people allowed it. Get real???? Ok, here are a few beads and trinkets...give me YOUR property, YOUR home, and anything else YOU hold dear...and I PROMISE you can live over here on this little patch of land that isn't even mine to give forever and ever....oops my fingers were crossed...now pay me for that little patch of land, follow my rules, honor my customs and disregard your own, and accept the blame and criticism for following the destructive paths we've led you down...Is that real enough for you????

This is Article 2 of The Canandaigua Treaty. It is a treaty, a legal document to last forever. Not just till someone decides it doesn't matter anymore. The United States has broken many treaties with the native peoples and continues to pull at the strings of many. How would someone feel if Canada decided to levy a tax against anyone Canadian inside the US? What New York is doing is the exact same thing.
Article 2. The United States acknowledge the lands reserved to the Oneida, Onondaga, and Cayuga nations, in their respective treaties with the State of New York, and called their reservations, to be their property; and the United States will never claim the same, nor disturb them, or either of the Six Nations, nor their Indian friends, residing thereon, and united with them in the free use and enjoyment thereof; but the said reservations shall remain theirs, until they choose to sell the same to the people of the United States, who have the right to purchase.
As far as given us some horses and bows and arrows. Wow, it’s 2008, I want some tomahawk missiles, some fighter jets, some real hardware, you are not setting me up like Palestine. Heck we learned the first time. Besides I am not on the res, or Iroquois.
Native and proud!
They didn’t kill us all.

Native and Proud......if you are going to start quoting the treaty then you should include all of it...the finger can be pointed both ways. Here is what Article 4 and 5 of the Treaty of Canandaigua states.

ARTICLE 4. The United States have thus described and acknowledged what lands belong to the Oneidas, Onondagas, Cayugas and Senecas, and engaged never to claim the same, not disturb them, or any of the Six Nations, or their Indian friends residing thereon, and united with them, in the free use and enjoyment thereof; now, the Six Nations, and each of them, hereby engage that they will never claim any other lands, within the boundaries of the United States, nor ever disturb the people of the United States in the free use and enjoyment thereof.

ARTICLE 5. The Seneca Nation, all others of the Six Nations concurring cede to the United States the right of making a wagon road from Fort Schlosser to Lake Erie, as far south as Buffalo Creek; and the people of the United States shall have the free and undisturbed use of this road for the purposes of traveling and transportation. And the Six Nations and each of them, will forever allow to the people of the United States, a free passage through their lands, and the free use of the harbors and rivers adjoining and within their respective tracts of land, for the passing and securing of vessels and boats, and liberty to land their cargoes, where necessary, for their safety.

American....and proud of it...

Personally, I have to say, if the New York State budget was balanced, and the state was not going or is already broke, I doubt this would be the issue. I guess I have become cynical enough to believe that the government wants a piece of the pie they can't have. They see the amount of money they are losing by folks giving their patronage to the reservations and see the money they are losing. To me, that is it in a nut shell. Leave them alone, let them do their business and run the darn government like I have no choice but to run my household-in the black!

Anonymous said "give them horses, bows and arrows, close off the reservation...let them fend for themselves..." Here's an idea...why don't we fence off your property, give you a fishing pole, and let you do the same? No more freedom of any kind for you, don't whine about your civil liberties or your constitutional rights--someone has taken it upon themself to decide you don't need them any more than the Seneca's do.

And while I'm on a roll, here's a reality check for the genius who wants John Wayne to "take care of the Indians"... A. He's dead, B. He was just an actor, and C. You can't believe everything you see in the movies...can you honestly say that if someone invaded your home, took everything you hold dear, needlessly raped and slaughtered your family, friends, and neighbors, cut off your food supply, and changed and took control of your entire way of life, YOU wouldn't fight back? Gimme a break...

Yes, I'm an AMERICAN....of Irish, Scottish AND Seminole descent.

To American and Proud
First let me start by saying I am American and proud as well, Very PROUD!
I am proud of the fact that by percentage the Native people have the highest rate of enlistment in the US Armed forces of all minorities. We have even been first to serve this great nation in every war throughout its history even before we were citizens. We served in the Revolution, War of 1812, Indian Wars (both sides), Mexican War, Civil War, Spanish American War, and World War I all before our citizenship in 1924. Only to come home in many cases have to turn around and fight against the very country we fought for. I am proud of the fact that the very people who we are condemning are the same people who helped in the birth of our nation’s democracy and constitution. The Iroquois Confederacy or Haudenosaunee were at the first congress and shared the Great law of Peace that unified the then 5 nations it became part of the ground work for constitution and the unifying of the thirteen colonies. The eagle is part of the symbol of the Great Law and our nation as well. Look at your one dollar bill and see the thirteen bundled arrows gripped in his claws. Signifying the strength of the thirteen colonies bound together under one cord. I am just tired of the criticizing of our culture and how we do is complain. Most people in this country do not know even know the true history of the Native Peoples. Let’s discuss the fact that over 80% all of all Indian Wars took place on Indian land, not treaty lands. That shows that Native people were defenders, not the aggressors.

As far as the complaining, well I feel we do not complain nearly as much as other minorities. Considering we have lowest rate of poverty percentage, highest rate of alcoholism, highest rate of disease, highest rate of suicide, and I could go on.

Back to your original point. I did not include the entire treaty because of space. As far as Article 4, The Seneca have lost a large portion of the original treaty and not by sale. The flooding of Kinzua took Seneca land.
Article 5 states that the US has the right to free passage across treaty land for its safety. Not to go to a Bills game. This gives police, fire, military, etc free passage. A judge has already granted the right to toll public usage under treaty law.

Why is everyone so concerned about what natives are doing and not what the governor is doing. The issue is taxes in general, not Indians. Where is it going to end, no one is screaming about their pop being taxed.

Native and Proud!
American and Proud!

To the last Comment!!! WAY TO LAY IT OUT!!!! I agree 100%. But I would like to ad 1 thing. As to article 5 : Even if it was not specefied about the free passage for safety what would it matter if the tolls went into effect anyway because if the goverment will not abide by the treaty Then the nation should not worry about it either and do what they have to 2defend there rights and land because they have lost so much as it is now then they need to what they got to do to keep what they have.
Also the goverment Infringes on everyones rights and everyones civil liberties one way or anouther everyday. It was just a matter of time till they messed with the Indians again. I just wish that every other culture stuck together and took a stand Like you guys do. But that will never happen.

So...if you are an American and proud of it, then why do we even need segregated land and a treaty any more? The USA did away with segregation decades ago. Why can't the indians just get along with the rest of the country and be common americans like the rest of us? why do they feel that they still need to be treated special when the issue is something that happened centuries ago? Should I still be mad at the Germans for putting my ancestors in the gas chamber? Or maybe I should be mad at the Japanese because of my relatives that died at Pearl Harbor? Just remeber....the Indians choose to continue segregating themselves from the rest of the country and have their own nation, so they should be treated like they are a totally seperate country. I'll call the Governor and heve him set up a border patrol around the Seneca Nations right away.

Wow.... Where do I start, common Americans like the rest of us? Well for one, common Americans have a cultural base they can go to, to connect with their culture, German, Irish, Italian, Latino, etc. Even most Americans off mixed cultural backgrounds identify with a common ancestory.
What is a common American? America is the melting pot of diverse culture, religion, origins, regions, and a fast assortment of things that define who we are. It is our freedom of choice, not by your choice, that allows us, and me to be American.
Why can’t everyone just get along with the Indians and let us have our identity and dignity. No one went to your home lands and forced their culture and language on you. I am not asking for all our lands back. Just allow us what is our, ours by treaty.
Do you know what a treaty is? If you want us to abandon our treaties then I guess they should abandon the treaties signed at then end of WWII with the Germans who put your ancestors in the gas chambers, or the Japanese who bombed your and my ancestry at Pearl Harbor, hard to swallow right. Treaties with the Indian people are not segregation; they are established land bases for us to keep for our people. Treaties signed to last forever because of land that was taken from us. Plenty in fact most of the Indian people chose and do assimilate. I live off the res and most of my friends are not native. I teach cultural awareness and have been for almost 25 years.
So then I assume the Germans continue to chose to segregate themselves because there is a Germany, and those darn Irish, Polish, Spanish, Mexicans, Heck right next door the Canadians are segregating themselves too. They have treaties that establish boundaries and borders to their lands and cultures. If I look at what you are saying then I most believe you want one world order. Not me!
You can keep your culture and still not segregate. Leave me have mine. Walk in my moccasins.
Just a thought, if you truly want to abolish all treaties. Well then kneel before the queen of Britain because our Constitution is no longer valid.

Oh yea I would have picked someone other then Custer too. Turns out he really wasn't the hero everyone thought.

You are forgetting a few things.....Americans beat the Britains for freedom....America beat the Germans....America beat the Japanese....all during wars that we didn't start. Also...we have made amendments to our constitution to keep up with the times. You want to keep to a 200 year old treaty word for word. Fine..let it be that way...then the US government should not have to give any special benefits to Native americans like free college tuition, social Security benefits...etc....they don't get anything special if it's not in the treaty! You should bow down to the USA because if it wasn't for us you would be speaking German.

Anonymous said...

No if it was not for us they would have all of the usa and still be speaking indian. Plus if you abolish the indian collage funds I guess that the next step would be to abolish the united negro collage fund and you better get rid of bet the tv channal. get real get a clue the treaty was there for there protection Now a days it is there for them to keep there land they paid dearly for it. so now I guess the house you live in right now in 75 years my grand kids come there and tell your family that your out because you have lived there long enough so that is it now its mine right.

Ok I apologize to everyone else for getting off the topic. And I should know better then continue. If you want to put out a fire don’t add wood. Yep you win. I will just wonder back to the res and drink my second grade education stereotypical drunk Indian self stupid to make you happy where I will spokem peace pipe.

If we would have scalped all your ancestors when they got off the boat we wouldn’t have this problem.
If it wasn’t for “us” I would be speaking German. Do you know any history? Your use of “us” includes us as well. Didn’t the code talkers play an important role in keeping you from speaking German as well? Considering Navajo was the one language the Germans could not decipher, apparently the understood English very well.

We have the Native American College Fund (a Non-Profit), Social Security is only collected by people who receive income, and native people receive an allotment from the BIA. That keeps people well below the poverty level. Before you even start yes I do pay taxes, property, income, sales, all of them. Have you ever been to a reservation? Yes Native children can receive a free college education if they graduate and if they have high enough SAT scores. Many government reservation schools give less the standard education (we were not included in a child left behind) so they do not test high enough. So we started our own schools and colleges at our own expense.

Your and my Constitution has amendments to keep it up to date. We have tried and tried to keep our treaties up to date. But as history has shown the government has broken and continues to break those treaties. That is kind of the topic of this thread that you so want to turn into injun bashing. I would rather keep the treaty word for word then have them reduced or in your case completely abolished. And if it was special and not in the treaty then it would mean we were trying to keep up to date now wouldn’t it?

Oh yea it was with our help that you beat the Brits for your freedom also.

My last word on this, though I am sure its not yours.
