Son Of Austin Couple Becomes Pararescueman

Only One In Ten Successful

Photo provided
USAF SSgt. David B. Schumacher

SSgt. David Schumacher is son of David and Sally Schumacher of Austin, PA, a 1998 graduate from Austin Area High School, and has been in the United States Air Force since 2000. After completing over 2 years of intense training he graduated from Pararescue & Combat School at Kirtland AFB, NM with Class 2008-04 on December 11, 2008.

SSgt. Schumacher has trained to become an expert medic, parachutist, scuba-diver, and mountain climber with tactical combat capability. From combat special tactics to night ocean parachute jumps and technical mountain rescue, Pararescuemen are there.

His training began with an indoctrination course at Lackland AFB, TX followed by a Combat Diver Training Course at Panama City, FL. He then completed Basic Airborne School at Fort Benning, GA, Military Freefall at Yuma, AZ, Combat Survival Training and Underwater Egress Training at Fairchild AFB, WA.

These training courses were followed by an EMT Paramedic Qualification Course and the PJ/CRO Apprentice Course at Kirtland AFB, NM.

Due to the intensity of this training, SSgt. Schumacher is considered one of the elite few (less than 10% who attempt actually graduate) to accomplish the honor of being a Pararescuemen.

The wearing of the maroon beret with the Pararescue Badge of Esteem, symbolizes the bold sacrifices made by Pararescuemen and their devotion to duty and aiding others in distress.

Their motto “THAT OTHERS MAY LIVE” is a tribute to the Pararescuemen who have made the ultimate sacrifice. SSgt. Schumacher will be assigned to the 38th RQS at Moody AFB, GA.
