Burdette E. West, 76, Millport, PA

Millport, PA---Burdett E. West, 76, of Canada Hollow Road, Millport, PA, died Wednesday, March 18, 2009 in the Select Specialty Hospital, Erie, PA after 3 months of heart surgery rehabilitation.

Born September 24, 1932 in Millport, PA, he was a son of John R. and Pauline M. Presher West. On August 16, 1958 in Millport, he married Beatrice I. Lawton, who survives. They celebrated 50 wonderful years of marriage in August of 2008.

Mr. West attended Shinglehouse High School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army attaining the rank of corporal while serving in Pusan, Korea from February 1953 until December of 1954.

After returning home from the military, Mr. West worked with his father at John R. West and Son in Millport. He also worked for Air Preheater Corporation in Wellsville, NY before forming West Brothers with his brother, Loyd, in 1965.

Currently he was the president, co-founder, and co-owner of Gas Field Specialists Inc., GFS Energy, and West Brothers, all of Millport, PA.

He was a member and past director of the Independent Oil and Gas Association of NY; the New York State Oil Producers Association; Sharon Lodge #598 F. & A.M., Shinglehouse; the Coudersport Consistory; and the Shinglehouse American Legion Post #530.

His greatest love was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving besides his wife of 50 years are a daughter, Cheryl L. (Douglas) Taylor of Shinglehouse; five sons: Rodney G. (Loraine) West of Pavilion, NY, Bradley A. (Dixie) West of Hornell, NY, Gregory D. (Christine) West of Millport, Scott R. (Diane) West of Clara, and Jeff B. (Wanda) West of Shinglehouse; twenty grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three brothers, John R. (Bea) West, Jr. of Warrensburg, Missouri, Groves E. West of Shinglehouse, and Lee S. (Delores) West of Cuba, NY; two sisters, Louise Bess of Silver Creek, NY and Virginia Kennemuth of Bradford, PA; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Mr. West was preceded in death by two brothers, Loyd West and Lynn West; and two sisters, Lucille Harmon and Mary Stonemetz.

Friends may call on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Virgil L. Howard Funeral Home, Shinglehouse, PA where funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at 11 am. The Rev. Roger N. Hain, pastor of Grace Bible Independent Baptist Church, Shinglehouse, will officiate. Burial will be in the Pauline M. West Cemetery, Millport, PA.

Members of Sharon Lodge #598 F & A.M. will conduct memorial services in the funeral home on Friday evening at 8:45 p.m.

Members of the Potter County Honor Guard will accord full military honors on Saturday.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.

all the years i've known him and the boys, he always had time to come over in the shade and talk, no matter what he was doing, well within reason of his work and employees.......we'll all miss you and your way of doing things....and they were always right......

one of the good old boys... he will so be missed by all that knew him. he leaves behind a great family that we are all lucky to have in our small town. god bless the west..
