Clinton County Wants To Capitalize On Cherry Springs Dark Sky Tourists

County Agrees to study 'Dark Sky Pike'

Old schoolhouse could become information kiosk

LOCK HAVEN Express--- The idea of designating the Coudersport Pike as "Dark Sky Pike" - a discussion that's been dormant for the last several months - is back on the table.

The Clinton County commissioners Thursday approved an $8,202 contract with Albertin Vernon Architecture LLC of Logan Mills to conduct a feasibility study of the former Springer School along the Coudersport Pike in Gallagher Township to possibly turn it into an informational kiosk for tourists.

Commissioner Tom Bossert said the school would retain its identity as an historic schoolhouse, but Gallagher Township - which owns the building and surrounding property - could use it as an information kiosk for the possible "Dark Sky Pike."

"It would be a starting point for tourism on the pike, ultimately reaching Cherry Springs State Park," he said. "It could become quite an asset for the county and tourist promotion."

The commissioners last discussed the "Dark Sky Pike" idea last summer as a way to increase tourism for those going to Cherry Springs State Park in Potter County.

That area is known as a top spot in the East to view the nighttime sky. Cherry Springs State Park is also the only "Dark Sky Park" in the state. More...
