Smethport Borough Receives Grant for Biomass Project
It was announced earlier this week that Smethport Borough has been awarded a $50,000 planning and engineering grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation of Pittsburgh for its wood biomass project. The town is trying to become the first community in the country to co-generate residential and commercial district heat and electricity by using waste wood and low-value wood from the region including the Allegheny National Forest. The money from the project would be re circulated within the local economy rather than being sent out of state. Don Tanner County Extension Director for Potter, Cameron, Elk and McKean Counties spoke about the project at the January meeting of the Coudersport Area Chamber of Commerce. Tanner said the Extension Office is working behind the scenes on many projects providing information and research. He said the work being done right here in North Central PA is leading the state. The Smethport project is modeled after some European projects which have been very successful in producing heat and light from natural renewable resources.
